Over the years, Colwyn Bay has been the scene of some remarkable batting feats, but none have been as remarkable as those yesterday by Aneurin Donald who celebrated the 50th anniversary of Championship cricket at the Rhos-on-Sea ground with 234 from 136 balls.
His record-breaking innings began at 2.10pm with Glamorgan on 96/3 in the 35th over as Jacques Rudolph returned to the pavilion after Wayne Madsen had taken a fine diving catch, with the teenager joining Will Bragg who had completed a sober fifty from 135 balls to blunt a lively Derbyshire attack.
During the next four hours, Aneurin turned the game on its head as he tamed the Peakites attack with his innings ending at 6.09pm with Glamorgan on 437/7 in the 86th over, and with Derbyshire having nine fielders lining the boundary’s edge after they had taken the new ball in a bid to stem the haemorrhage of runs.
Aneurin reached his 100, 150 and 200 with sixes, and scored 127 runs in the session between lunch and tea, as well as scoring a further 107 runs in a pulsating evening session as Glamorgan raced from 274/4 from 64 overs at the interval to end the day on 481/8 on 96 overs
