The Lord's Taverners today launched its sports kit recycling scheme, which provides thousands of young people across the world with recycled sports kit. By donating specialist equipment and sports clothing it enables young people to partake in sport, thus removing one of the key barriers to sports participation.
England's Heather Knight, Sarah Taylor and Georgia Elwiss yesterday helped to launch the programme and the Ashes rivalry was put to one side as their Australian counterparts Kristin Beams and Jess Cameron helped donate to the scheme. The England stars helped to kick off the sports kit recycling programme which, from the 14th - 30th September, is encouraging individuals, clubs and schools to donate sports kit into red collection bins at county cricket grounds and sports shops across the UK, including at the National Cricket Centre at The SSE SWALEC, Glamorgan's headquarters.
Heather Knight, England Women's batsman, commented: I've seen the impact first hand in Rwanda, how essential this kit is for people that have very little and it gives them the chance to enjoy the sport we love. I would like to encourage anyone who has outgrown their sports kit or no longer uses it to donate to the scheme and help others fulfil their sporting potential.
The Lord's Taverners sports kit recycling scheme collects unwanted cricket, rugby and football kit to give young people in the UK and abroad. The UK's leading youth cricket and disability sports charity have partnered with several other charities to ensure the kit reaches the desired places, and have already delivered to the following countries: India, Ghana, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, Romania and the UK.
Lord's Taverners CEO Paul Robin said: This scheme is vital in giving thousands of young people across the world a sporting chance, providing them with the kit they badly need in order to engage in their chosen sport. Without this kit, the chances of these youngsters being able to take part in sport are greatly reduced, which is why we are so grateful to each and every person who kindly donates their unwanted sports gear.
