Essex exploited the conditions better and took their chances - Maynard

Head coach Matt Maynard believes that despite an innings defeat, it was small margins that resulted in his side's loss to Essex in the LV= Insurance County Championship.

The Welsh county dropped four catches in the Essex innings - including Nick Browne on eight, who went on to score his 16th first-class century - as Glamorgan conceded a 186-run first innings deficit. Maynard also praised the Essex seamers who made early inroads into the Glamorgan batting line-up during both innings.

“I think the preparation we had with so many players isolating before the game had a bit of an effect but not quite as much as that," said Maynard.

"It was a new ball wicket and Essex took advantage of that. It looks like an absolute hammering to lose by an innings, but it’s small margins. It’s a disappointing way to start but Essex have been County Championship winners and they won’t be happy to not be playing in the first division.

"There is no doubt there was a little bit of rust there, but it gives us time to practice before Durham. Essex exploited the conditions better and took their chances. We have to look at this as a one off and not get too down on ourselves.”
