Essex v Glamorgan - NatWest T20 Blast: Match Preview

22 May 2014 | Matches
Glamorgan continue their campaign in the NatWest T20 Blast by visiting Chelmsford to meet the Essex Eagles in a floodlit contest starting at 7pm.
Both teams go into this match unbeaten in the Nat West T20 Blast as last Friday night, Glamorgan began their 2014 campaign with a pulsating 10-run victory over Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl whilst the Eagles started with an eight wicket victory against Middlesex at Lord's last Saturday.

Glamorgan's success on the South coast was based on a fine all-round effort, with everyone playing a role at some stage during what proved to be a gripping contest. Indeed, at the 18-over stage both teams had identical totals but. whereas Glamorgan garnered an invaluable 23 runs from the last dozen deliveries, Hampshire could only muster 13, as Graham Wagg and Jim Allenby held their nerve with the ball, with the latter having a fine game as captain and deservedly winning the Man-of-the-Match Award for his frugal efforts with the ball, not conceding a single boundary in his four over quota.

The Welsh county now head east to Essex's headquarters and a ground where they have previously played two Twenty20 matches. Glamorgan won in June 2010 thanks to a pugnacious innings of 89 by Mark Cosgrove, with the Australian southpaw leading the run chase with a series of withering blows as they romped to a seven wicket win. It was another cricketer from the Southern Hemisphere who stole the headlines in the contest at Chelmsford in July 2011 with New Zealander Tim Southee taking 6/16 including a hat-trick before Owais Shah posted 60 as Essex reached their target with five wickets in hand.

Glamorgan's victory at Chelmsford in 2010 remains their sole victory to date over Essex in Twenty20 cricket with the Eagles having won both of their encounters at the SWALEC Stadium. Jim Allenby and his men will therefore be looking to maintain their winning form in this second away match of the 2014 tournament, and ahead of the first home game at the SWALEC Stadium against the Sussex Sharks on Friday, May 30th.
