Euros Lewis - a tribute

Euros Lewis, the former Glamorgan cricketer, has died after a short illness at the age of 72.
Born in Llanelli in January, 1942 Euros played for Glamorgan between 1961 and 1966, during which time he appeared in 95 first-class matches, as well as half a dozen limited-overs matches. The left-handed batsman and off-spin bowler made his Championship debut for the Welsh county in 1961, and initially it was his bold, free hitting as an opening batsman that secured Lewis a regular place in the side.

He also worked hard at his spin bowling, and was able to augment the first-choice spin partnership of Don Shepherd and Jim Pressdee. 1963 was a red letter year for the emerging all-rounder as his developing skills were recognized by the M.C.C. who selected Lewis in their side to play the West Indians at Lord's, whilst later in the year, Euros returned career-best figures of 8/89 against Kent at Swansea and was presented with his Glamorgan cap.

Euros was also a member of the Glamorgan side which defeated the 1964 Australians at Swansea as the Welsh county recorded their first-ever victory over the men in baggy green caps, with Euros and the other spinners fully exploiting the dry and dusty wicket at the St.Helen's ground.

In 1966 Euros left Glamorgan to join Sussex for whom he played until 1969 before returning to South Wales and continuing to enjoy success in club cricket with Dafen Welfare CC. During his career with Glamorgan Eurois scored 2,169 runs and took 151 wickets at 25 runs apiece. His highest first-class score was 80 against Sussex at Cardiff Arms Park in 1965, whilst in 1963 he made 78 in the Gillette Cup match against Worcestershire at The Gnoll in Neath.

On hearing of Euros' death, Hugh Morris, Glamorgan's CEO and Director of Cricket said, We are all saddened to hear of the passing of Euros Lewis. He held a very special place in the Club's history by being a member of the Glamorgan side which fifty years ago this summer defeated the Australians at Swansea. The Club sends its condolences to Euros' family and his many friends in club cricket in West Wales.
