Four Things We Learned From Glamorgans Win Over Surrey

27 May 2016 | Cricket
As the dust settles on another memorable night of T20 cricket for Glamorgan, let\'s take a look at the four things we learned from the Welsh county\'s first win of the season at The Kia Oval.

The Power Of Pace
Timm van der Gugten showed everyone why Glamorgan were so keen on his signature in pre-season, carrying on his superb form with figures of 4-1-14-4. His pace appeared to be too much for the Surrey batsmen – and the guile of Graham Wagg and Michael Hogan provided a terrific foil. Early wickets can be crucial in T20 cricket and with Dale Steyn shortly arriving in Cardiff, the Welsh county will have a bowling attack that can cause serious damage to the opposition’s batting.

Rudolph Back In Form?
Glamorgan did not need fireworks to chase down Surrey’s meagre total of 93, but they were expertly marshalled by captain Jacques Rudolph, who saw the visitors through to victory with an assured 34 not out. After a lean start to the season, it would have been a welcome boost to the captain’s confidence. The South African enjoyed a stellar season in T20 cricket last year, hitting 461 runs in 13 innings and Glamorgan will hope he can do something similar this season.

Lloyd Opens His Arms
After experimenting with Mark Wallace, Craig Meschede and Graham Wagg at the top of the order in T20 cricket last season – have Glamorgan now found a new opening partner for Rudolph in David Lloyd? The Welshman played with refreshing freedom and verve, striking 31 off 21 eventful deliveries, including three boundaries off Sam Curran. If Lloyd can bat that way throughout the competition, he and Rudolph will set a platform for some formidable totals.

A Glimpse Of Ingram
Though he only faced eight balls, scoring 11 runs, Colin Ingram gave everyone a glimpse of his talent and prowess as an explosive T20 batsman. Coming in at Number Three, he drilled his first delivery of the season for a huge six over long on – what a way to return to the fold, after a difficult six weeks out injured with a knee injury. Glamorgan’s hopes of a quarter-final place will be bolstered enormously if Ingram can find the boundary with consistency this season.
