On Friday at Newport Cricket Club the Academy had a thrilling victory against a Combined High Schools (CHS) team from New South Wales in Australia. Past players for the CHS side include current Australian tourists Michael Clarke, Steve Smith, Mitchel Starc and Josh Hazelwood so we were expecting a tough game and so it proved.
Glamorgan lost the toss and CHS elected to bat first. On a very good surface CHS got off to a solid start putting on 43 for the first wicket. The middle overs were dominated by the Glamorgan spinners with Connor Brown bowling his 10 overs for just 32 and picking up a wicket whilst Prem Sisodiya at the other end bowled his 10 overs and took 2 for 33. Top scorer for the visitors was their number 3 Sanga with 40. The run rate was kept to a reasonable rate throughout and a good all-round bowling performance restricted CHS to a score of 216 for 7 off their 50 overs.
In reply Glamorgan got off to a good start and at 73 for 1 looked in complete control. However wickets started to fall at regular intervals and whilst most of the batsmen got starts none capitalised and made a big score. The main contributions coming from Joe Voke 40, Gareth Ansell 34 and Scott Thornton 28. However the boys held their nerve and we managed to get over the line winning by 1 wicket with 1 over remaining.
Glamorgan Head of Talent Development Richard Almond said, It was a good test for the boys to measure themselves against opposition from Australia and a pleasure to host the CHS team for the day.
The Academy's next fixture is at Newport CC on the 24th and 25th August against Middlesex U19's.
