Glamorgan secured their first batting point in the 70th over
Lunch Report
Lancashire have dominated this match so far, in front of a crowd swelled by Red Rose supporters, with Alviro Petersen and Ashwell Prince producing a masterclass of batting as they gorged themselves on the home side's bowling, adding a Club record 501 from 89 overs. Then it was the turn of 41 year-old seamer Glen Chapple, in only his second Championship appearance of the season, to take centre-stage as the oldest man currently playing county cricket moved three wickets closer to his prized target of 1,000 first-class victims as Glamorgan crumbled to 165/6 with the follow-on looming over them like the sword of Damocles.
They duly began the day, under heavy cloud cover and a hint of dampness in the air, still 533 runs in arrears with Mark Wallace and Graham Wagg hoping they could commence a collective rear-guard action to prevent the second successive Championship defeat for the Welsh county. Wagg, who had defiantly deposited the penultimate ball last night into Penrhyn Avenue, struck the morning's first boundary as he drilled Kyle Jarvis through the covers, but with the total on 173, Wallace dragged a ball from Chapple onto his stumps.
Andrew Salter joined Wagg who responded by on-driving Jarvis to the ropes. James Faulkner and Aaron Lilley then shared the bowling duties with Salter drilling the latter through the covers. Wagg then lofted Lilley again into the gardens of the houses in Penrhyn Avenue to bring up the 200, before doing the same to the next delivery. After a dot ball, Wagg biffed another ball from the off-spinner into the semi-detached properties as the leading six-hitter in county cricket in 2015 added further to his tally.
Wagg then brought up the fifty stand by guiding Faulkner through the slips for four before Salter took a leaf out of Wagg's batting manual by lofting Lilley to long-on for four. But with the total on 228, Wagg perished at wide long-on as he attempted another lusty blow against Lilley with Karl Brown completing the steepling catch. It then became an all-spin attack as Simon Kerrigan returned at the Embankment End.
Salter clipped Lilley to mid-wicket for four before Cosker deftly late cut the off-spinner for four to see Glamorgan to a second batting point. Cosker then swept Kerrigan for four before Chapple returned with the new ball in the 82
nd over and was also late cut for four by Cosker. But Jarvis returned to bowl Salter, before Michael Hogan cover drove the seamer for four. The Australian then deposited Chapple straight for six into Penrhyn Avenue. A flurry of singles then followed as Glamorgan reached the 300-mark and another bonus point with Hogan clipping Lilley for two, before striking the penultimate ball of the session from Kerrigan straight for six.
Hogan completed 50 from 37 balls to become the top scorer in the 1st innings
Teatime report
Dean Cosker and Michael Hogan had shown some late resistance as lunch was delayed by half an hour by the tenth wicket pair who took the total to 311/9 at the interval. Hogan continued by twice cover driving Aaron Lilley for four before deftly late-cutting him for two as he brought up the fifty stand.
Hogan then lofted Lilley into Penrhyn Avenue for another six to complete a 38-ball fifty, followed by a late cut for four to reach his career-best score. Cosker also punched Kerrigan off the back foot for four through the covers but Lilley ended their merry spree as Hogan was caught at slip attempting another cut as Glamorgan ended up on 348, before following-on 350 runs in arrears.
Jacques Rudolph responded by clipping Kyle Jarvis first two balls for four to square-leg, before Will Bragg did the same to Glenn Chapple when the veteran opened the bowling at the Penrhyn Avenue End. Rudolph then despatched Jarvis through extra-cover before Bragg followed suit against the Zimbabwean.
But with the total on 32, Jarvis ended Rudolph's stay at the crease as he edged low to second slip where Steven Croft completed the catch. After an over from Chapple, Jarvis struck again with his next delivery as Bragg was well caught by wicket-keeper Alex Davies as he edged behind. Chris Cooke survived the hat-trick ball before clipping Jarvis to mid-wicket for four
Glamorgan ended the day still 204 runs in arrears
Close of Play Report
Having reached 40/2 at tea, Chris Cooke and Colin Ingram began the evening session looking to further chisel away at the sizeable deficit. Cooke duly brought up the fifty by pulling Chapple for four, but with the total on 57, Ingram departed as Alviro Petersen took an astonishing one-handed catch high above his head as he ran backwards at long-off as his fellow South African tried to chip Simon Kerrigan for four.
David Lloyd joined Cooke who cut Kerrigan for four, before the new man struck his first boundary by savagely pulling James Faulkner, and then clipping the next ball to the fence at mid-fence. He also despatched successive balls from Faulkner through the covers for four before off-driving and cover driving successive deliveries from Aaron Lilley. But with the total on 109 he was l.b.w. playing forward to the off-spinner, and then eleven runs later, Kerrigan bowled Mark Wallace.
His departure saw Andrew Salter arrive as night-watchman to join the obdurate Cooke and the pair held firm in the final twenty minutes with Salter also pulling Lilley for six, whilst Cooke off-drove Kerrigan and swept Lilley for further boundaries in the closing overs.
