Glamorgan were dismissed for 187 shortly before the close of the second day of their Specsavers County Championship match against Nottinghamshire at The SSE SWALEC after the visitors made 448 in their first innings.
Evening update
Glamorgan were 47/2 when play began after tea, with 45 overs remaining in the daily quota, but to the fourth ball of the session, and without further addition, Colin Ingram was caught at second slip as he edged a drive against Brett Hutton. Four runs later Jacques Rudolph also departed as he edged Harry Gurney into the gloves of acting wicket-keeper Rikki Wessels.
David Lloyd began with a pair of superlative cover drives for four against Hutton, whilst Aneurin Donald also fluently drilled Gurney through extra cover for four before clipping Hutton to the ropes at mid-wicket. Lloyd then clipped Gurney to square-leg for another boundary before Donald straight-drove Hutton to the boards at long-on. Lloyd then greeted the return of Broad to the attack by pulling him for four.
Donald also inside-edged a drive against Fletcher to long-leg before pulling the seamer for four as the hundred came up in the 35th over. Shortly afterwards, Lloyd edged Broad for four before clipping him through point for four. Donald added another four as he clipped Fletcher to fine-leg but with the total on 123, Lloyd edged Broad to Mullaney in the slips. Two runs later Broad gained another scalp as he bowled Chris Cooke .
Donald remained defiant however and on-drove Samit Patel for four, whilst Andrew Salter square-drove Fletcher. Donald then completed his fifty from 73 balls but shortly afterwards he pulled Fletcher to backward square-leg where Luke Wood, the substitute fielder plucked the ball one-handed out of the air high above his head. 152/7 then became 158/8 as Marchant de Lange holed out at deep mid-wicket to Fletcher.
Four runs later Timm van der Gugten chipped Patel to Stuart Broad at short mid-wicket as Lukas Carey joined Andrew Salter. The teenager inside-edged Fletcher for four before off-driving both him and Brett Hutton, followed by a huge pull for six against the latter. But next ball Carey repeated the stroke and was caught at deep square-leg by Fletcher as Glamorgan were dismissed for 187, trailing by 261 runs..
Afternoon update
No further time was lost after the early lunch with Nottinghamshire resuming on 389/6 after a stop-start morning session. Van der Gugten and De Lange resumed the bowling duties as Hutton continued to use the long handle and Chris Read, despite hobbling on one leg swatting van der Gugten for six into the Grandstand. Hutton also pulled van der Gugten for four to backward square-leg.
Colin Ingram’s leg-spin was then introduced at the River End with Carey switching to the Cathedral Road End. Hutton flicked the latter to fine-leg to complete his half-century from 80 deliveries, but with the total on 427, Read’s noble three-hour innings ended as he pulled Carey to deep square-leg where Will Bragg, at the second attempt caught the ball. He was replaced by Stuart Broad who began with a couple of scampered singles before Hutton swept Ingram for four. Broad also drove Ingram straight for four before being bowled attempting to heave him into the River.
438/8 then became 442/9 as Hutton swatted Carey to mid-on when De Lange took a good running catch, and six runs later van der Gugten returned to bowl Harry Gurney and thereby completed a well-deserved five-for. There were 64 overs remaining in the daily quota as Broad and Fletcher opened the bowling to Nick Selman and Jacques Rudolph.
Selman secured an early boundary against Broad, but with the total on 11, he edged Fletcher into the gloves of Wessels who had replaced the injured Read behind the stumps. Will Bragg got off the mark by inside-edging Broad to fine-leg before Rudolph slapped Broad through the covers for four, but with the total on 20, Bragg was run out by Cheteshawar Pujara running in from square-leg as he failed to regain his ground as he tried to scamper a single against Broad.
Ingram opened his account by cover-driving Fletcher for four before unleashing a booming straight drive when Hutton entered the attack. Rudolph also greeted Harry Gurney by drilling him off the back foot through point before despatching him through the covers for another well-timed boundary.
Morning report
A casual observer of proceedings during the first two sessions yesterday might have felt confused, given that the batsmen from Nottinghamshire, who are currently riding high on top of Division Two and unbeaten so far this season, were being kept in check by the bowlers from a county in the lower half of the table and who, unlike their visitors from the East Midlands, had already exited the One-Day Cup earlier in the week.
But that was the scenario after the visitors had opted to bat first, with Glamorgan’s bowlers making them work hard for every run in the opening couple of sessions, reaching 155/4 by tea. In the final session, 180 runs came Nottinghamshire’s way in 32 overs as Riki Wessels continued the good work of fellow centurion Jake Libby before departing in the penultimate over of the day. His departure, to a ball just 16 overs old, gave the home attack renewed hope as play resumed with the East Midlands side on 335/6 and eyeing further batting points.
After early morning rain there was also more cloud cover and a bit of dampness in the air as Timm van der Gugten and Marchant de Lange resumed the bowling duties. A glance to fine-leg saw Chris Read complete his fifty from 71 balls. But shortly after drizzle started to fall and it intensified into steady rain, briefly forcing the players off the field after three overs. Play resumed half an hour later with no overs lost, and Read flicked De Lange to fine-leg to see the visitors to another point at 350.
Brett Hutton twice cut short deliveries from van der Gugten over point for four before being struck on the helmet by De Lange. Read also received treatment after appearing to sustain a leg injury whilst running a single. Despite the attention of the physio, he called for a runner having made 65 and after being joined by Steven Mullaney, he flayed De Lange through point for four. Hutton did the same to van der Gugten as the seventh wicket pair continued to eye a fifth batting point.
Despite some lusty swipes, they were 388/6 after 110 overs and one run later, the rains returned and an early lunch was taken.
