Glamorgan begin 50-over campaign

Head Coach Matt Maynard has named a 13-man squad for Glamorgan’s opening Royal London One Day Cup fixture of the season against Essex Eagles at Sophia Gardens tomorrow.

Chris Cooke will lead the side after replacing Colin Ingram as captain of the Royal London One-Day Cup side in the winter, while all-rounders Andrew Salter and Craig Meschede both return for the 50-over competition after missing the opening Specsavers County Championship match of the season.

The squad also features the three centurions from the game against Northamptonshire last week in Marnus Labuschagne, Billy Root and Kiran Carlson and they will all be hoping to carry that form into the white-ball competition.

Carlson in particular is hoping to capitalise on his good start to the season which saw him plunder a century from just 101 balls after he missed the majority of last year’s Royal London One-Day Cup campaign studying for his exams at Cardiff University.

This year he is available for the whole competition and with the new signings made over the winter, he is confident Glamorgan can enjoy a successful 50-over campaign.

“It’s nice to get some runs early on but you can’t rest on your laurels,” said Carlson.

“This year all the batters are very hungry and want to push towards a 1,000 runs in the season. We really set our stalls out to get big scores like we did in the game, and all the batters are very hungry.

“Luckily with University this year I’m available to play all the One-Day competition which is very exciting.

“I’ve got a really good feeling about this year; I think the team is shaping up nicely so hopefully we can get a few wins on the board early.

“We got a couple of new guys come in, Billy (Root) Marnus (Labuschagne) and Charlie (Hemphrey) who not only with their batting, add a lot in the field as well as the ball which is going to be massive for us.”

Glamorgan Squad to face Essex Eagles: Cooke (C), Carey, Carlson, De Lange, Hemphrey, Hogan, Labuschagne, Lloyd, Meschede, Root, Salter, van der Gugten, Wagg
