Batsman Usman Khawaja will join Glamorgan as cover for fellow Australian, Shaun Marsh who has been called up to the Australian squad for their One-Day series with England.
Glamorgan CCC is grateful to Cricket Australia for allowing Khawaja to join the Club early after Khawaja initially signed as Glamorgan’s second overseas player in this year’s Vitality Blast.
Khawaja will arrive in Wales later this week and will be available for Glamorgan’s next three Specsavers County Championship fixtures, starting with Warwickshire at Edgbaston on Saturday.
Hugh Morris, Chief Executive and Director of Cricket at Glamorgan, said: “We have been in negotiation with Cricket Australia and Usman ever since Shaun was called up to the Australian One-Day team and we are delighted he will be joining us early as cover.
“Usman is a very talented cricketer, who has a fantastic Test record and I’m sure he will do a great job coming in for Shaun and be a positive influence on our young squad.”
Despite arriving early, Khawaja will miss Glamorgan’s final Vitality Blast group match after being selected in the Australia A squad playing in India from 17 August.
Khawaja will still be available for Glamorgan’s opening thirteen Vitality blast fixtures, starting with an away trip to Hampshire on 6th July, however will miss the final game against Surrey.
“We want to congratulate Usman for being selected for the tour of India - it is always a great honour for any player to represent their country,” added Morris.
“Usman will still be with us for the majority of the competition and we look forward to seeing him in action in the Blast.”
