Glamorgan celebrate the coronation of its Patron

Saturday’s Coronation in Westminster Abbey of King Charles III means that Glamorgan Cricket can celebrate having a monarch as their Patron.

His Majesty was appointed as Patron of Glamorgan County Cricket Club in 1986, the year before his visit to Sophia Gardens in 1987 as we launched our Centenary Year.

Following a visit to the Avenue Road ground in Abergavenny during 1994 where Glamorgan were staging a Championship match against Kent, His Majesty also paid a visit to Sophia Gardens ahead of the Ashes Test in 2015 when he met both the England and Australian teams.

Most recently, Glamorgan Cricket was honoured to welcome His Majesty to Sophia Gardens on 9th July 2021, in celebration of the club’s 100th anniversary as a first-class county.

During this visit, His Majesty met pupils from a number of local schools who had prepared a range of artwork, poetry and other materials celebrating Glamorgan’s first-class cricket centenary. The then Prince watched the professionals train, met coaches and leading players and then observed the school children playing cricket on the outfield before officially unveiling a special plaque made from Welsh slate and being presented with a special club tie and cap to mark the occasion.

Glamorgan Chief Executive, Hugh Morris said:

“As our Patron, King Charles III has a long-standing association with Glamorgan County Cricket Club and we would like to wish His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort well as we celebrate the Coronation on Saturday, 6th May.”
