Glamorgan Cricket is a heritage leader

The highly informative QR code plaques created by Glamorgan Cricket at a number of locations around their headquarters at the Sophia Gardens ground in Cardiff were the most viewed information source at any heritage site throughout Wales during June 2019.

Created in conjunction with HistoryPoints who have QR code plaques at 1,600 other heritage locations throughout Wales, Glamorgan Cricket’s information panel about the ground and the pitches at Sophia Gardens was number one in the national hit-list, whilst the pages about the drainage system and the links to the works during the nineteenth century with the diversion of the River Taff by Isambard Kingdom Brunel were at number 5 in the list of most visited pages during June.

“It’s really great that so many people are interested in the fascinating history of the Sophia Gardens ground,” said Andrew Hignell, the Club’s Heritage and Education Co-ordinator, “as well as the way our modern drainage system here at Glamorgan County Cricket Club benefits from actions taken back in the 1840s.”

“With Stadium Tours and School Visits at a record level during2019, this is a further endorsement for all the hard work which the Community team and Tour Guides have put in over the past few months, as well as being a reflection of the interest in the ground’s rich history by visitors to Cardiff for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. We were anticipating details of the many benefits for the local economy, but to be the number one heritage site in Wales in terms of hits on our QR code plaques during June, is wonderful and quite unexpected news.”
