Glamorgan County Cricket Club has pledged its support to the Tata Steel ‘Save Our Steel Campaign’ as the deadline for prospective buyers passes.

The steelworks company, which has some 7000 employees across Wales including sites at Llanelli, Port Talbot, Newport and Shotton, has been donated 300 tickets for the Glamorgan versus Hampshire match on June 3, where the company will display a banner on the pitch during the interval.

Alan Coombs, chair of the Port Talbot multi-union committee said: “It’s great to have the local communities behind us and part of the communities are the local sports teams.

"We have long-standing partnerships with teams such as the Aberavon Wizards and the Newport Gwent Dragons, but it is fantastic to see other great Welsh sporting clubs such as Glamorgan Cricket, Cardiff City and the Ospreys all getting behind our industry which is so important to Wales.

“It is a real morale boost for employees to see such a generous demonstration of support from Galmorgan Cricket Club, and to be able to parade our Save our Steel banner on the picth helps to keep our industry in the public eye.

“It is critical that we keep the steel industry at the forefront of people’s minds, because there is still a long way to go to get a buyer on board, and there are still opportunities for governments to give us the level playing field that allows us to compete on the world stage. ”

Glamorgan CCC Chief Executive Hugh Morris aded, “Our support lies firmly with everyone at Tata Steel and we were pleased to be able to do something to further this very important cause. We look forward to welcoming steelworkers to The SSE SWALEC for T20 match against Hampshire on 3 June.”
