A probing performance by the Glamorgan seam bowlers induced a mid-innings wobble as Derbyshire lost six wickets for 58 runs before recovering to 288 on the opening day of their floodlit Specsavers County Championship match at The SSE SWALEC. In reply, Glamorgan were 5/0 at the close.
Close of Play Report
Derbyshire had lost their seventh wicket on 157 to the penultimate ball of the middle session, and Timm van der Gugten and Marchant de Lange resumed the bowling looking to quickly polish off Derbyshire’s resistance. But Tom Milnes cover drove van der Gugten whilst Daryn Smit continued to watchfully defend before top-edging van der Gugten for four as well as on-driving the Dutchman.
Milnes greeted the return of Hogan by edging him through the slip cordon, whilst Smit pulled Wagg for four as Derbyshire secured their first batting point. Milnes also edged a drive against Wagg through the slip cordon before Glamorgan took the new ball with the visitors on 215/7.
De Lange and van der Gugten returned to the fray with Smit guiding the latter through the gully for four but next over, with the total on 223, he spared at a delivery from de Lange and was caught in the gully by Andrew Salter. Having been joined by Tony Palladino, Milnes straight drove van der Gugten for four before edging de Lange through the slips for another boundary.
Palladino also got a thick outside edge for four against van der Gugten before Milnes drilled de Lange through mid-off as Derbyshire reduced 250 and secured a second batting point. Milnes then completed his fifty with a glance to fine-leg from his 87th delivery. But next over Hogan returned and ended Miles doughty riposte as he became Cooke’s fifth victim of the innings.
Having been joined by sixteen year-old Hamidullah Qadri, Palladino then upper-cut and pulled de Lange for a pair of further fours. The teenager was bowled by a no ball from de Lange before driving Hogan over mid-off for four, but the innings ended as Palladino miscued against Hogan and was caught by Wagg. This left Glamorgan with two overs to face with van der Gugten and Jacques Rudolph surviving without any undue alarms.
7pm Report
Derbyshire resumed on 86/1 as van der Gugten and Hogan continued the bowling duties, with Wayne Madsen upper-cutting and square-cutting the former for a pair of rasping fours. But the Dutchman had the last laugh as next over, Madsen edged into Chris Cooke’s gloves. 99/2 saw Alex Hughes join his captain as the Cardiff floodlights were switched on.
Hughes got off the mark with a brace of fours square of the wicket and to fine-leg, but the return of De Lange and Wagg, under the lights saw the swinging ball repeatedly beat the outside edge, and after several overs of playing and missing, De Lange was rewarded for his persistence outside off stump as Godleman edged into Cooke’s gloves as Glamorgan snaffled their first bowling point on 127/3.
A dozen runs later they claimed another wicket as Gary Wilson edged De Lange into Cooke’s gloves and then next over Wagg trapped Alex Hughes l.b.w. with a ball which jagged back in. Two overs later, Wagg struck again as Jeevan Mendis edged to second slip where Nick Selman took a good low catch. He nearly pouched another one shortly afterwards as Tom Taylor edged the returning Hogan through the slips, but the visiting batsman was not so lukcy in the final over before the interval as he also edged van der Gugten into Cooke's gloves.

Godleman then nurdled van der Gugten for four through backward point before Madsen punched him through extra cover for another boundary.
Van der Gugten nearly claimed a second scalp as Madsen edged just wide of Andrew Salter in the gully. Michael Hogan and Graham Wagg then entered the attack as Derbyshire reached the 50-mark in the 19th over. Both bowlers induced a thick outside edge from Madsen’s bat but in each case the ball flew wide of second slip and gully, but there was nothing fortuitous about his next four as he despatched Wagg through extra cover en route to a 77-ball fifty. Shortly before the interval, Andrew Salter bowled in tandem with de Lange
