Glamorgan gain further valuable practice against Notts

3 Apr 2017 | Matches
Glamorgan’s batsmen occupied the crease for a second time this morning before their bowlers had a good workout this afternoon in their two-day friendly against Nottinghamshire at The SSE SWALEC as both teams took full advantage of further outdoor practice under the warm Welsh sunshine.

Morning report

Nottinghamshire declared this morning on 50/0 giving Glamorgan a first innings lead of 171 runs in this practice contest, with the Welsh county batting again for a further hour, and Nottinghamshire looking to bat for the remainder of the day, giving Glamorgan’s bowlers a decent workout ahead of the start of the County Championship programme on Friday against Northamptonshire.

During their second innings, Aneurin Donald unfurled some well-timed drives, whilst Chris Cooke nonchalantly flicked one ball off his hips to square-leg before playing a drive against Harry Gurney which sent the ball speeding like a tracer bullet through extra-cover. Kiran Carlson also played some crisp drives before Glamorgan declared on 50/3, 221 runs ahead of the visitors.

When Nottinghamshire batted for a second time, Roman Walker, the 16 year-old seamer from Wrexham shared the new ball with Jack Murphy. Once again, the North Walian teenager cut a favourable impression as Jake Libby and Greg Smith quietly accumulated. Craig Meschede and David Lloyd also had an accurate spell in tandem before the interval.

Afternoon update

Nottinghamshire resumed on 36/0 after lunch with Jake Libby and Greg Smith resuming their unbroken partnerships as Roman Walker resumed at the Cathedral Road End, with Luke Cheshire – the seventeen year-old left-armer - at the River End.  Cheshire, who was born in Oxfordshire and raised in Australia, also delivered a frugal spell before David Lloyd joined him in tandem. Libby reached his fifty from 67 balls by punching Lloyd through the covers as he dominated the opening stand whilst his partner accumulated in singles.

After reaching his half-century, Libby retired with Michael Lumb replacing the opener before next over Smith also departed in similar fashion as Riki Wessels joined Lumb. Spinners Owen Morgan and Andrew Salter had a spell in tandem during which Salter bowled Lumb as he propped forward to the off-spinner.

With Samit Patel as his new partner, Wessels drove Salter through long-on and long-off as the visitor’s reached the 100-mark in the 29th over. But the spinner gained revenge as Patel drove uppishly in the next over with Morgan at mid-off taking a good diving catch.  With Chris Read having joined Wessels, youngsters Roman Walker, Luke Cheshire  and Jack Murphy all returned for further spells before tea.

Evening Report

Having reached his fifty shortly before tea, Riki Wessels retired during the interval and was replaced by Tom Moores as Kiran Carlson and Craig Meschede resumed the bowling duties. Chris Read duly became the third batsman to reach fifty and then retire as Brett Hutton joined Moores for a spell out in the middle.

Owen Morgan and Andrew Salter also had further spells with the latter bowling Moores for 28 whilst the former removed Hutton l.b.w. before bowling Luke Fletcher. Salter ended proceedings as Gurney miscued to mid-off where Rudolph held the catch as the Nottinghamshire innings ended on 243.
