Head coach David Harrison has named a 14-man squad for our second home Royal London Cup fixture against Yorkshire Vikings.
Glamorgan welcome their northern counterparts to Cardiff after a record-breaking win against the Kent Spitfires in their last outing at Sophia Gardens as they look to continue their unbeaten start to the competition.
Colin Ingram produced one of the all-time great white-ball innings for the Welsh county against the Spitfires, as he smashed 155 in our memorable three-wicket win. His flawless knock consisted of 15 fours and three maximums as he struck the highest ever List A score at Sophia Gardens.
At 107/5, the contest was seemingly heading towards a victory for the visitors, but a record sixth-wicket List A stand of 186 between Ingram and Tom Cullen saw Glamorgan begin their Royal London Cup title defence with back-to-back wins.
Wicket-keeper Cullen retains his place in the squad. He was a late replacement for Chris Cooke after he failed a fitness test, and struck a career-best 80* in the run chase. A typically gutsy effort from the right-hander, in a win that will live long in the memories of the Glamorgan faithful.
Right-arm quick James Harris also returns to the squad as a replacement for Timm Van der Gugten, who was called into the Birmingham Phoenix squad for The Hundred last week.
Glamorgan currently sit third in the Royal London Cup Group B table with two wins from two games, with the visitors one place behind them in fourth. They have two wins and one loss from their three fixtures so far.
View from the camp – Colin Ingram
“It has been a really good start. I think coming in there was a little bit of pressure after winning it last year. We wanted to start well and make sure we give ourselves a chance to be in the mix, which we have.
“I think in the first game, the guys bowled really nicely and we took some confidence out of that. And in the second game, to knock off a big total, we saw a few more building blocks built. We are looking forward to tomorrow and another fresh opportunity.
“I have refined a few things. I daresay that the Championship cricket has really helped with that. Facing more balls during the year, from spin and seam, helps. I am enjoying my batting at the moment which I think is important.
“I am keeping it simple, trying to build partnerships and trying to help other guys around the group. All in all, I am just enjoying it and I feel like I am hitting it nicely which always helps.”
Head-to-head – Glamorgan vs Yorkshire Vikings
The Welsh county will be looking to avenge their four-run defeat last season at Sophia Gardens by the White Rose side for whom newly appointed captain Johnny Tattersall (53) and hard-hitting all-rounder Matthew Waite (44) shared a match-winning partnership. In reply, Hamish Rutherford (58) and Nick Selman (92) shared an opening stand of 121 but, after they were dismissed, the Glamorgan innings rather fell away as they chased what seemed to be a modest target of 231 in 50 overs.
The list below shows the last six meetings between Glamorgan and Yorkshire at Cardiff in List A cricket and includes a dramatic quarter-final encounter in the NatWest Trophy in 1997 when Glamorgan were victorious by one run.
5 May, 1996 - Glamorgan won by 4 wickets
29 July, 1997- Glamorgan won by 1 wicket
19 May, 1998 - Yorkshire won by 37 runs
11 Aug, 2002 - Glamorgan won by 21 runs
20 Aug, 2007 - Yorkshire won by 8 wickets
12 Aug, 2021 – Yorkshire won by 4 runs
That game in 1997 proved to be yet another cliff-hanger, as Glamorgan chasing a target of 237, had a mid-innings wobble, losing seven wickets for 69 runs, including captain Maynard who was suffering from chicken-pox. When last man Dean Cosker, then aged 19 year-old, joined Waqar at the crease, 28 runs were still needed. Soon after, Waqar had a moment of good fortune, surviving a sharp chance to Michael Vaughan, before drawing on all of his international experience, the Pakistani farmed the strike against Darren Gough and Craig White, with the young spinner showing great maturity, well beyond his years, to take Glamorgan closer and closer to their target.
As the young spinner later reflected, “I didn`t feel too nervous because when you are out there, you just rely on your instincts. Waqar was so cool under pressure. He kept talking to me all the time, encouraging me to carefully watch the ball and don`t get out. Coming from one of the legends of the game, you try and listen. I survived a shout for l.b.w. against Darren Gough as the ball started reversing a great deal, but when Chris Silverwood, bowled a wide, we had won a quite remarkable game!”
