Glamorgan Masters XI v Bridgend Town CC - Sunday, Sept. 6th

3 Sep 2015 | Cricket
A number of past and present stars of Glamorgan Cricket will be at Bridgend on Sunday as a Glamorgan Masters XI meets Bridgend Town CC in a 20 overs match starting at 1.30pm.

The idea to form a Glamorgan Masters team has been the brainchild of former players Ian Thomas and Michael Powell. Both will feature in the Masters XI having floated the idea at the annual get-together of the Glamorgan Former Players Association at the SSE SWALEC in June. With warm support from their former county colleagues, as well as members of the current squad, the outcome is the inaugural match on Sunday, September 6th for a Glamorgan Masters XI, led by Mike Powell, against Bridgend Town whose current captain is Andrew Davies, the Club's former bowler.

Amongst the former Glamorgan players who will be present on Sunday will be Hugh Morris, Steve James, Steve Watkin, Darren Thomas, David Harrison, Gareth Rees, Dan Cherry, John Glover, John Derrick, Alistair Dalton, Richard Grant, Stuart Phelps and Adam Harrison, whilst Dean Cosker and wicket-keeper Mark Wallace will also feature in the Masters line-up.

The response to our idea has been really positive from both the Glamorgan Former Players Association and by the Club itself, said Thomas, who now works as a Personal Development Manager for the Professional Cricketers Association. Several other counties have formed Masters XI's so the game at Bridgend will allow us to pilot this concept.

Hopefully, it can become a once a year event besides giving the former players another chance to meet up, as well as acting as ambassadors for Glamorgan County Cricket Club, and helping to raise valuable funds for good causes.

In the case of this year's contest against Bridgend Town, money will be raised towards the Glamorgan Academy tour to the Middle East in December, besides helping the Bridgend club to celebrate their 175th year. Members of the Glamorgan Academy players will also be present on the day to sell raffle tickets in aid of the tour.
