A victory over leaders Worcestershire in the latest round of matches has seen Derbyshire rise up to sixth place in the Division Two table, fourteen points ahead of Glamorgan who remain in eighth spot after their draw against Kent at Canterbury. Derbyshire's 138-run victory over Worcestershire was their fourth Championship success of the 2014 campaign, which also includes a six-wicket win over the Welsh county when the two sides met in July at Derby.

Derbyshire have been victorious on all five of the previous meetings between the two teams, including on their last two visits to the Cardiff ground. They won the contest in April 2012 by 130 runs after Jon Clare returned match figures of 11/57 as Glamorgan were dismissed for 95 and 102, whilst in June 2011 they won by six wickets thanks to 106 by Wes Durston, 88 from Dan Redfern and another five-wicket haul in Glamorgan's first innings by Clare.

Glamorgan's most recent home victory against Derbyshire came at Swansea in June 2003, when the Welsh county won by an innings and 70 runs thanks to a return of 6/71 from Robert Croft as the visitors followed-on, before being dismissed again by the Glamorgan bowlers.

Croft also played a leading role in the most recent Glamorgan victory over Derbyshire at Cardiff, which came back in September 1992 during the final match of the season twenty two years ago. After the washout of the first two day's play, three Glamorgan batsmen - Steve James, Matthew Maynard and Viv Richards - each scored half centuries before the off-spinner took 6/49 as Glamorgan won by 63 runs.
