Glamorgan v Essex Eagles: RLODC Head-to-Head

30 Jul 2015 | Matches
Glamorgan will welcome the Essex Eagles to the SSE SWALEC on Friday July 31st for their next game in the Royal London One-Day Cup, with the day-night contest at the Cardiff ground getting underway at 2pm.
After their pulsating victory against the Kent Spitfires on Tuesday evening, Glamorgan will be looking to move further up the group table in the 50 overs competition against a side who they beat by 89 runs in mid-May at the SSE SWALEC in Championship cricket.

The dramatic win against the Spitfires was the Club's fourth-highest run chase in one-day cricket, and their best-ever at the Cardiff ground. After the disappointments from successive defeats in Championship cricket, plus missing out to the Eagles on a place in the last eight of the Twenty20 competition, Chris Cooke's high-octane innings and Colin Ingram's sublime century against the Spitfires, plus the promising bowling performance against the Notts Outlaws in the washed out contest on Sunday at Welbeck CC, has put down a marker to other teams in the group that Glamorgan are still a decent unit in List A cricket.

Glamorgan and Essex last met in List A one-day games in 2011, but both games - at Cardiff and Chelmsford - fell foul of the weather and neither reached a conclusion. The last completed games between the two sides therefore came in 2009, starting on May 3rd at Chelmsford when an unbeaten 123 by Gareth Rees, plus a vibrant 72 from Mark Cosgrove saw Glamorgan romp to an eight-wicket victory. Nine days later, Essex gained revenge at Cardiff as Danish Kaneria's leg-spin saw the Pakistani claim 4/16 as Essex won by seven wickets.

Glamorgan last defeated Essex in a List A game at home in 2004 - the season when they clinched the National League title - with Robert Croft's team winning the contest at Sophia Gardens by six wickets after Alex Wharf had claimed 3/24 with Andrew Davies also picking up 3/35 before an unbeaten 45 by Matthew Maynard saw the Welsh side home.
