Glamorgan meet Lancashire in their next match in the Royal London Cup with the two teams meeting in the 50-overs competition at The Gnoll, Neath on Wednesday 17 August in a match scheduled to start at 1100am. (writes Andrew Hignell)

Glamorgan’s defeats by the Northants Steelbacks and the Essex Eagles has seen the Welsh county slip down to 7th place in the group table, whilst Lancashire, after their narrow loss to leaders Hampshire remain in second place with strong hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.

This will be the first time since 2015 that the two teams have met in List A cricket, but the contest seven years ago, at Old Trafford was washed out after 52 balls. Lancashire have played three Championship games previously at The Gnoll – in 1937, 1956 and 1961 – but this will be the first time that Lancashire have played a List A game at the Neath ground having previously met Glamorgan in limited-overs cricket at Sophia Gardens, Ebbw Vale, Swansea, Pontypridd and Colwyn Bay.

As the list below shows of the last six home venues for List A matches between Glamorgan and Lancashire, Colwyn Bay has been the venue in Wales where the two teams have met recently.22 August 2004 at Colwyn Bay – Glamorgan won by 5 wickets
14 August 2005 at Colwyn Bay - Lancashire won by 8 wickets
15 May 2009 at Cardiff - Lancashire won by 8 wickets
14 September 2009 at Cardiff – Glamorgan won by 27 runs
8 August 2010 at Colwyn Bay – Lancashire won by 8 wickets
21 August 2011 at Colwyn Bay - Glamorgan won by 69 runs

Glamorgan were victorious in the boundary-laden contest at Colwyn Bay in 2011 with the Welsh county posting 328/4 from 33 overs with Alviro Petersen leading the way with 144, full of elegant drives and massive blows over the leg-side in an arc between square-leg and long-on. One of his blows ended up in the hallway of a house adjoining the ground in Rhos-on-Sea as the surprised occupant opened his front door just as the ball sped towards the house!

In all, Petersen struck 9 fours, plus 10 sixes besides sharing in a competition best opening stand of 199 with Gareth Rees who also had a smashing time, striking successive balls from Stephen Parry through the window of the Lancashire changing room before lofting the next delivery into the car park and through the windscreen of a committee member’s car. After their departure, Stewart Walters added to the mayhem by racing to his half-century from just 19 balls, with a remarkable 83 runs coming from the final five overs. Stephen Moore and Steven Croft each scored half-centuries but each fell to the wily Dean Cosker who ended up with figures of 4/43 as Lancashire’s run chase petered out as Glamorgan won by 69 runs.

Lancashire’s most recent victory in Wales in List A cricket against Glamorgan came in 2010, also at Colwyn Bay in a game when Steven Croft planned a match-winning innings of 93 in front of a decent-sized crowd of 3,500 as Lancashire comprehensively defeated the Welsh county by eight wickets with sixteen balls to spare.
