Glamorgan Welcome Surrey to Sophia Gardens as part of Double-Header

6 Jun 2023 | Cricket

Limited Overs Head Coach Mark Alleyne has named a 13-man squad for Glamorgan's clash against Surrey in the Vitality Blast.

Eddie Byrom drops out of the squad with a hip injury and is the only change to the squad from Sunday's win on the road at Hove against Sussex Sharks.

Tomorrow's contest against Surrey is the second half of a double-header at Sophia Gardens, with Western Storm commencing proceedings against The Blaze at 14:30.

The Welsh county scored their fourth-highest T20 score when batting first against Sussex Sharks on Sunday. Chris Cooke scored 50, while Colin Ingram made 48 as Glamorgan scored 219/5.

Captain Kiran Carlson took his maiden T20 wicket, finishing with figures of 2/13 (2 overs), while Jame McIlroy took 3/28 as Glamorgan secured a 32-run win at Hove to move into third place in the South Group of the Vitality Blast.

Second-placed Surrey are the opponents for the Welsh county tomorrow and last time out they beat Kent Spitfires by 5 wickets at Canterbury.

View from the Camp - Kiran Carlson

"With the schedule at the moment, there's so much cricket, I think it's important to recover as best you can. If injuries happen then they happen and it's about having squad depth coming in and still managing to win games.

"I have every confidence in the squad that we've got. We've got the likes of Zain ul Hassan, Andy Gorvin and Callum Taylor on the sidelines who have all performed really well in the second team and I think if they get their chance then they'll do a fine job.

"The double-header will be good for the crowd and good for us as well to watch some cricket before our game. Hopefully, it's a good wicket like it was on Friday and there's loads of runs and loads of wickets for us."

The match at Cardiff in 2021 was a crackerjack of a contest with Glamorgan clinching a one-run victory after a contrasting pair of final overs to each innings. For the Welsh county, Billy Root, opened his shoulders to strike four sixes in the last over against Gus Atkinson as his team went from 129-6 to 153-6.

In contrast, Surrey needed thirteen to win from the final six balls, but Kyle Jamieson, the hard-hitting fast bowler from New Zealand plus veteran captain, Gareth Batty, could only muster eleven as Timm van der Gugten held his nerve and parried a drive from the Kiwi to the final ball of the gripping contest before calmly running him out at the bowler’s end as he tried to scamper a single to tie the game,

This avenged the defeats by Surrey at Cardiff in 2018 and 2019. In the former, Aaron Finch bludgeoned an unbeaten 44 as Surrey raced to 60-0 in five overs to win a rain-shortened contest, whilst in 2019 Mark Stoneman posted an assertive fifty, before a half-century stand by Ben Foakes and Ollie Pope saw Surrey to their target.
