Hogan and Carlson return for Glamorgan

Head Coach Matt Maynard has named a 14-man squad for Glamorgan’s Vitality Blast fixture against the Sussex Sharks at Hove tomorrow.

The Welsh county welcome back veteran seamer Michael Hogan who returns from a thigh injury he picked up in the Vitality Blast fixture against Surrey last month.

Hogan proved his match fitness by playing for Newport Cricket Club in the South Wales Premier League on Saturday, where he claimed 3/35 in his 10 overs.

Batsman Kiran Carlson returns to the squad to bolster the batting options after scoring a half-century for the 2nd XI last week against Hampshire in the Second Eleven Championship.

After an eventful week where he bowled the final over in the extraordinary tie against Gloucestershire, and took the wicket of close friend Aneurin Donald against Hampshire, seam bowler Lukas Carey is delighted with the added responsibilities he has been given with the ball this season.

“It was nice to be trusted to bowl the final over,” said Carey. “It was a very nervous experience, but I backed my skills.

“I was disappointed to not win the game for us, but I think a tie was a fair result on the day. Having added responsibility really brings out the best in me and I was happy to show that I can be trusted in high pressure situations.

“At the end I was annoyed that I couldn’t get us over the line, I wanted to get that win for the boys as we have been working really hard and the results just haven’t come.”

On Friday, Carey travelled to The Ageas Bowl to take on Hampshire, and took the wicket of former Glamorgan batsman Aneurin Donald, who Carey has played with since Wales Under 11s.

“It was a pretty surreal moment, I didn’t know how to react if I’m honest,” added Carey.

“Nye and I have been very close for years, and we had joked about what we would do if we played each other. It was nice to get one over on him and nicer to contribute to a good bowling display.”

“We focus on Sussex next, and it will be a tough game. They are a great side, but we have lots of confidence after our win in the One-Day Cup there earlier this year, and I think we have the talent to turn them over again.”

Glamorgan squad to face Sussex: Ingram*, Root, Morgan, Lloyd, Zaman, Lawlor, Carlson, Taylor, Cooke+, Carey, Salter, de Lange, Hogan and Wagg.
