James Weighell admitted that a weight was lifted off his shoulders after taking his first wickets at Sophia Gardens since joining the club at the beginning of April.
The 27-year-old finished with figures of 2-46 in his 12 overs as Glamorgan dismissed Lancashire for 173 on Day One of the LV= Insurance County Championship game.
“It’s always a nervy time when you don’t take one [wicket] in your first game,” the seam bowler admitted. “You think it could take another couple of games but it was only going to be a matter of time before I got off the mark really, so it’s a lot of pressure off myself and hopefully I can crack on from here.”
The former Durham and Leicestershire man dismissed opener Alex Davies, caught by Andrew Salter, and number three Luke Wells, who he trapped leg before.
Asked whether or not nerves played their part in the early stages of his time in Cardiff, Weighell said: “It was a bit of everything really. I haven’t played an awful lot of cricket in the last two years so it was more a matter of getting back into the swing of playing and figuring out how I play myself again.
“I just need to get my confidence going, get a bit more experience and I should be OK in a couple of games time I would have thought.”
On a day where 19 wickets fell in the Welsh capital, the Middlesbrough man said it was difficult to know why the batsmen weren’t able to make their mark.
“We came off after bowling them out and thought maybe they’d underplayed it and had dismissals that we probably didn’t think we were going to get, and then we went out and played in a similar way and had a few soft dismissals ourselves and ended up in a similar situation.
“It’s quite a tough one to put your finger on, whether it’s the pitch, the bowling or the batting, but I think it’s been a mixture of everything really - good bowling, some indifferent batting and it’s been a bit of a bizarre day really.”
