Howzat For The Ashes

Pupils at Birchgrove Primary School in Cardiff have produced a special song with a cricket theme called "Howzat" as part of the Ashes Partner Schools Project which is being run by Glamorgan Cricket ahead of the Ashes Test Match at the Club's headquarters starting on Wednesday, July 8th
Birchgrove PS are just one of a group of primary and secondary schools from across Wales who have been preparing material ahead of the iconic Test Match series between England and Australia. As their Headteacher Sarah Morgan explains A group of cricket lovers in the primary school as well as the More Able and Talented learners from Year 6 have joined forces with The Songwriting Doctor to craft a catchy, fun song about the forthcoming Ashes series.

Entitled 'Howzat!', it conjures up the excitement and friendly competition played on a beach or in a park as they seek to hit fours and sixes against their friends. Taking their inspiration from the calypso Caribbean steel drums, synonymous as the musical accompaniment to the game, the school's able writers pooled their resources and shared knowledge of cricket to pen the lyrics. They then teamed up with the music maestros who fettled the words and music into a jaunty little number which, we hope, will have you whistling away all day.

In total, a dozen children from the Primary School were involved in bringing together many different aspects of the curriculum in an interesting and original way. The song will be a fantastic reminder of one of the most important sporting events to grace our Capital City this summer.

Pupils from Birchgrove Primary School will also be involved in the Guard of Honour during one of the days of the Ashes Test, so like the other schools from throughout Wales who are involved in the Ashes Partner Schools Project, they will be present at the home of Glamorgan Cricket and will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of sharing in one of sport's greatest occasion and being present when England go head-to-head with Australia.

We are so grateful to the Community team at Glamorgan County Cricket Club for giving our school and pupils the opportunity to take part in this occasion, said Sarah Morgan. It's a tremendous honour for Birchgrove Primary School and we're all really looking forward to visiting the SWALEC Stadium for the First Test, and when the Aussies come to town. Howzat!
