End of Match Report – Day Three
Kiran Carlson’s team began the final session on 140/5 with Charlie Hephrey on 86 having been joined by Dan Douthwaite needing 122 from 30.1 overs as Andrew Salter and Lukas Carey continued the bowling duties. After a series of singles, Salter struck again as Hemphrey, on 93, holed out to deep mid-wicket where Callum Taylor judged a fine running catch close to the boundary’s edge.
Kieran Bull joined Douthwaite but it was only a brief stay as two overs later he played onto his stumps against Salter. Roman Walker began by on-driving Salter for four before Douthwaite scythed him to deep mid-wicket for another lusty boundary followed by a straight six. He then greeted the return of Wagg by depositing him over square-leg for six before Tegid Phillips, another Academy player entered the attack and with his third bowl removed Roman Walker who edged the young off-spinner to Nick Selman at slip.
Callum Nicholls was the new batsman but he only lasted two balls as Phillips struck again as the Academy batsman from St.Fagans miscued a drive into the hands of mid-on. Wagg then switched to left-arm spin and ended the contest in the next over as Douthwaite edged to Selman at slip giving Chris Cooke’s team victory by 80 runs.
Teatime Report – Day Three
Kiran Carlson’s side began the afternoon session on 18/0 needing a further 244 runs in the 61 remaining overs with Graham Wagg striking an early blow as he had Tom Cullen caught by Chris Cooke in the first over of the session. Owen Morgan joined Charlie Hemphrey who found the ropes again with a square drive against Wagg but the left-armer struck again four overs later as Morgan also feathered a catch into Chris Cooke’s gloves.
25/2 saw Harry Friend make his way to the middle to join Hemphrey who greeted the introduction of Andrew Salter into the attack by straight-driving him for six before driving Wagg to mid-wicket for four. But with the total on 58, Friend departed l.b.w. to Salter as Ruaidhri Smith became Hemphrey’s new partner. The opener greeted the return of Marchant de Lange by pulling him for four to complete a 93-ball half-century followed by another six over long-off against Salter.
Smith began by lofting Salter to long-on for two and four but two overs later he miscued another leg-side blow and was caught at short fine-leg by Carey. Kiran Carlson duly took guard with his side needing 182 in 42 overs with Hemphrey lofting Salter over long-off and long-on for a pair of fours. Carlson began with a pair of rasping square-cuts against de Lange before doing the same to Salter.
Shortly before tea, Hemphrey also drove Callum Taylor to long-off for four before lofting Salter into the Enclosures at the River End for six. Carlson cover drove and reverse-swept the off-spinner for boundaries but in the final over before the interval he departed l.b.w. to Taylor with his side on 140/5 and needing 122 from the remaining 30.1 overs.
Lunchtime report – Day Three
Chris Cooke and his team began the day on 105/2 with a lead of 165 over Kiran Carlson’s side, and the captain soon extended this as he cover drove Michael Hogan for three in the day’s opening over. But in the third over, the evergreen seamer removed Taylor who playing forward defensively edged a ball into Tom Cullen’s gloves. 110/3 saw the arrival of Graham Wagg in the middle and he began by thick-edging Hogan through a vacant fourth slip position for four before flicking him to fine-leg for another boundary.
The combative all-rounder then pulled a short ball from Bull for four before plonking the next ball to the ropes at deep mid-wicket. A single against Bull saw Cooke complete his half-century from 67 balls as Ruaidhri Smith replaced Hogan at the Cathedral Road End. He duly ended Wagg’s tenure of the crease with his opening delivery as Bull pouched a smart catch at first slip. With the total on 136/4 Andrew Salter became Cooke’s next partner but his stay in the middle proved to be a brief one as next over he was caught by Kiran Carlson at short-leg playing forward to Bull.
Alex Horton was the next batsman and he opened his account by lofting Bull over long-off for six shortly after Cooke had also cover-driven the off-spinner for four. The captain then pulled Smith to mid-wicket for another boundary before Horton edged Charlie Hemphrey for four to third man. The teenager unfurled a pair of more conventional boundaries as he then cover-drove the spinner before Cooke square-drove Douthwaite to the point boundary. Next ball, he added another off-driven four to his tally but on 84 he edged Douthwaite into Cullen’s gloves whereupon he declared leaving Hogan’s team a target of 262 to win in the 69 remaining overs.
Hemphrey and Cullen opened the batting with the former off-driving Lukas Carey for four before reaching 18/0 at lunch.
Close of Play Report – Day Two
Carlson’s XI declared at tea, 60 runs in arrears so Cooke’s XI began batting after the interval with Nick Selman and Connor Brown opening the batting and looking to build on their lea as Ruaidhri Smith and Michael Hogan operated with the new ball. Selman parried Smith through the gully for three before glancing him to fine-leg for four, but with the total on 20, Smith found the edge of Selman’s and a diving Charlie Hemphrey at second slip completed a juggling catch.
Callum Taylor joined Brown who off-drove Hogan for three before his new partner cover drove Smith for four. Brown then greeted the introduction of Kieran Bull into the attack by pulling the off-spinner for four but soon after he edged a ball from Roman Walker into Alex Horton’s gloves and departed for 14. Chris Cooke began by twice cover-driving Walker before steering him through backward point for four. He then on-drove Walker for four before clipping him to fine-leg for another boundary.
Callum Taylor also cover-drove Bull for four before Zac Essenhigh, the young Academy bowler from Penarth, had a spell at the River End. Taylor reverse-swept Bull for four before Cooke pulled Essenhigh for four when the schoolboy dropped short. Cooke also cover-drove Bull for four before on-driving Essenhigh for four as his side ended the day on 105/2 with a lead of 165.
Teatime Report – Day Two
Kiran Carlson and his team began the afternoon session on 124/1 with both he and Charlie Hemphrey retiring at the interval as Dan Douthwaite and Tom Cullen resumed the innings after lunch as Marchant de Lange and Lukas Carey returned for their second spells of the day. After another accurate spell by each, Graham Wagg returned in tandem with Andrew Salter and was twice nurdled for four by Douthwaite.
Carey then switched to the Cathedral Road End for his second spell of the afternoon and continued to probe away on and around off stump. Callum Taylor also had a spell at the River End as Douthwaite remained the more aggressive of the two batsmen, swatting Carey to square-leg as well as scampering a series of singles with his partner who also on-drove Sisodiya for four.
At tea, Carlson’s XI were 199/1 with Douthwaite unbeaten on 49
Lunchtime Report – Day Two
After the thunderstorms and downpours on Monday, Tuesday was dry and sunny as play resumed in this rescheduled contest with Charlie Hemphrey and Kiran Carlson resuming their innings on 13/1. Marchant de Lange and Lukas Carey continued the bowling with the ball just eight overs old, with each delivering a probing spell and restricting the batsmen to a series of singles until Carlson cover drove and pulled successive deliveries from Carey to the ropes.
Hemphrey also found the ropes in Carey’s fifth over of the morning as he cover drove the seamer before Carlson did the same when Graham Wagg entered the fray at the Cathedral Road End. Carlson also on-drove Joe Cooke for four when he replaced Carey at the River End whilst Hemphrey also pulled him for four in his next over, followed next ball by a booming cover drive.
With the total on 85, Carlson had a life when he pulled a ball to Ben Kellaway, the substitute fielder at mid-wicket only for the umpire to call no-ball. He celebrated his good fortune by pulling Andrew Salter to the ropes at mid-wicket before lofting him over long-on for four. Carlson also nurdled the off-spinner for three to backward point prior to completing a 101-ball fifty shortly before the lunch interval with his side on 124/1.
Close of Play Report - Day One
Team Cooke began the final session on 188/4 after 61 overs with Root looking to accrue a further 28 runs for the Club’s first hundred of the season (and in their 100th year as a first-class county).Roman Walker and Michael Hogan resumed the bowling duties with Root cover-driving Walker for his eighth four prior to Taylor repeating the stroke against Hogan for his fifth boundary.
After some well-placed singles, Root also nurdled Walker for four to third man before Kieran Bull returned in tandem with Ruaidhri Smith who, with the total on 217, ended Taylor’s innings as he edged a drive into Cullen’s gloves. Alex Horton replaced him in the middle with Root sweeping Bull for four, but on 94 Root flat-batted a ball from the off-spinner straight to Carlson at point.
221/6 saw Graham Wagg join forces with Horton and reverse-sweep his first delivery for four. He added another orthodox sweep to fine leg in the spinner’s next over before he lost his partner who was caught at bat-pad by Carlson as he propped forward to Bull.
Andrew Salter replaced him and saw Wagg continue in assertive vein as he swept Bull high over square-leg for six before drilling Dan Douthwaite through mid-off for four and followed two deliveries later by another rasping straight drive. Salter also opened his shoulders to pull the all-rounder for four whereupon Chris Cooke declared with his side on 259/7 and eight overs remaining in the day’s quota.
Charlie Hemphrey and Owen Morgan opened the batting with Marchant de Lange and Lukas Carey sharing the new ball. Hemphrey struck the first boundary as he square-drove Carey before Morgan drove the seamer through the covers. But Carey gained revenge in his next over as Morgan departed leg before with Carlson joining Hemphrey and seeing his team to 13/1 at the close of play.
Teatime Report – Day One
Chris Cooke’s XI resumed on 98/3 after 29 overs with Michael Hogan and Ruaidhri Smith returning for a second spell. Billy Root struck the first boundaries of the session as he cover drove successive balls from Smith before sweeping Kieran Bull for four when the spinner returned for the fifth over of the session. In Bull’s next over, Root harpooned him over mid-wicket for six en route to completing an 85-ball fifty.
With Cooke content to garner singles at the other end, Root then lofted Bull for a four to long-on. Cooke ended his sequence of singles by pulling Smith to the boards at mid-wicket but three overs later he edged Bull to slip where Charlie Hemphrey completed the catch. 147/4 saw Callum Taylor join Root and he began by cutting Dan Douthwaite for four.
Charlie Hemphrey had a short spell at the River End shortly before tea but was cover-driven for a pair of fours by Taylor who also in the penultimate over of the session square-drove Owen Morgan for four as Team Cooke went to tea on 188/4 with Root unbeaten on 72.
Lunchtime Report – Day One
Glamorgan complete their pre-season preparations with another intra-squad game, this time with a three day game at Sophia Gardens with Chris Cooke’s XI playing Kiran Carlson’s XI. The former won the toss and batted first with Nick Selman finding the boundary ropes in the opening over as he flicked Michael Hogan to square-leg. But in the fourth over, and the total on 19, the opener feathered a catch into Tom Cullen’s gloves as Ruaidhri Smith made the early breakthrough.
Connor Brown joined Joe Cooke who had also struck Hogan for four with a square-drive through backward point before cover-driving Smith. With the total on 40, Jamie McIlroy entered the fray and with his second delivery he found the edge of Brown’s bat as Cullen completed his second catch. Billy Root duly made his way to the middle as Dan Douthwaite also entered the attack. After a series of singles, Root flicked McIlroy to fine-leg for his first boundary.
After 80 minutes play Kieran Bull’s spin was introduced at the River End with Cooke pulling him for four before unfurling a back foot drive through extra-cover against McIlroy. But later in the over, and with the total on 64, the left-armer breached Cooke’s defences as he bowled the opener. His departure saw Chris Cooke join Root and he began with a cover drive for four against Bull before deftly late-cutting the off-spinner.
Root then cover-drove Roman Walker for four before ending the pre-lunch session by sweeping Bull in front of square for four as his side went to the interval on 98/3.
