It’s an exciting time at the club - Lloyd

All-rounder David Lloyd will become the first North-Walian born player to captain Glamorgan since Wilf Wooller in 1960 when he leads the side in the Royal London Cup this season.

He replaces Chris Cooke as captain of the 50-over side, who will be playing in the ECB’s new hundred competition after being drafted by Birmingham Phoenix.

“I’m obviously very pleased to be given the opportunity to lead the team forward in the Royal London Cup.

“It’s an exciting time for me personally and it’s pleasing Matt and Mark have given me the chance to take over while Chris is away.

“I’m always proud when I play for Glamorgan and being Welsh makes it extra special.”

The 50-over competition will overlap with The Hundred, which means Glamorgan will be without Cooke, as well as Colin Ingram and Marchant de Lange, however Lloyd believes it will present a good opportunity for other players within the squad to make their mark.

“Hopefully we can have a good run in that competition because we’ve got a good squad and we haven’t lost too many players to The Hundred, so we’ll have a good chance going into it and hopefully can progress and do well.

“We’ll have quite a young squad which will give people the opportunity to play and prove themselves at this level.

Lloyd captained the side during a part of last season while Cooke was injured but shares a very similar style to his club captain and is determined to continue the positive culture developed last season.

“I like to make sure everyone feels part of the team and give them a voice in the changing room which is important if people have issues they feel comfortable discussing them.

“I also like to back the lads, make sure they are enjoying the game and play exciting cricket.

“The form in the County Championship with Chris is at the helm is something we wanted to build on.

“We’ve got a good culture at the club and we want to take that forward which is important for the club and the youngsters coming through.”
