Glamorgan Cricket was saddened to hear yesterday of the tragic passing of umpire John Williams who was a long-standing official in cricket in Pembrokeshire.
John died, aged 79, in hospital in Haverfordwest a month after being struck on the head whilst officiating the Pembrokeshire League game between Pembroke and Narberth on July 13th. After treatment on the pitch, John was taken to the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff where he was placed in an induced coma. On August 1st John was transferred to Withybush Hospital in his native Pembrokeshire but sadly his condition did not improve and he passed away on August 15th. John was a prominent member of Hundleton CC and, during his career as an umpire, he stood in games involving both Glamorgan 2nd XI as well as Wales Minor Counties.
On hearing of John’s passing yesterday, Hugh Morris, the Chief Executive Officer of Glamorgan Cricket said, “John personified all that is good about grass roots cricket in Wales. He moved from being a playing member of a successful league club to a highly respected official in local leagues, and someone who was good enough to umpire county 2nd XI and Minor County matches. Glamorgan Cricket send its condolences to John’s family and his wide circle of friends throughout Welsh cricket."
