Labuschagne and Stokes set to clash once again

Head Coach Matt Maynard has named a 14-man squad for our upcoming LV= County Championship fixture against Durham at the Riverside.

Billy Root retains his place in the squad after scoring a highly impressive unbeaten century opening the batting against Worcestershire in the 2nd XI Championship encounter at Newport this week.

Timm van der Gugten returns to the squad, and he is joined by left-arm seamer Jamie McIlroy for the first time this season.

Van der Gugten has recovered from the hamstring issue that kept him out of the Welsh county’s impressive six-wicket victory against Leicestershire last week.

The win propelled Glamorgan, albeit briefly, to the top of the Division Two table. We now sit in second place as we travel to Durham, who once again include the England Men’s Test captain Ben Stokes in their squad.

View from the camp – Matt Maynard

“I'm very pleased with the first block, one more game and it'll be a massive effort up in Durham who are a very strong outfit.

“It is difficult four days up in Durham, they are a very strong side. They will be a tough opposition, especially on home soil.

“Having Stokes in the side is a big boost for them. He is high class, a brilliant player. He showed in that innings just coming back how destructive he can be in all formats.

“We have seen him do it against the Aussies up at Headingly a few years ago. He is a world-class player, so obviously it will be a challenge to play against him. But they have a lot of good players, with him being the icing on the cake if you like.”

Head-to-head – Durham vs Glamorgan

The victory over Leicestershire has catapulted Glamorgan back into second place in the Division Two table and, had it not been for a declaration by Sussex, plus a late afternoon run-chase by Middlesex at Hove, the Welsh county might have been heading to Durham as leaders of Division Two. In contrast, Durham are in fifth spot in the table and are still seeking their first victory of the campaign, despite Ben Stokes’ batting fireworks at New Road in a contest which saw a fine rear-guard action by the Worcestershire batters as the game ended in a draw.

The two teams met at Sophia Gardens in the opening round of Championship games during the first week of April, with the game ending in a draw after Durham opener Alex Lees had carried his bat for an unbeaten 182. Colin Ingram made 87 for Glamorgan, whilst Chris Cooke posted a pair of fifties after Andrew Salter had also claimed career-best figures of 7-45 on the final morning as the Durham batters went helter-skelter for quick runs prior to a declaration.

In all, the two teams have met each other on ten occasions in Championship cricket on Durham soil and you can view a full set of records and statistics in the matches between the two teams by clicking HERE
