Leicestershire v Glamorgan - match preview and squad news

25 Apr 2014 | Matches
After their draw with Gloucestershire, Glamorgan travel to Leicestershire for their next match in the LV=County Championship with the Welsh county meeting the East Midlands side in a four-day contest which is scheduled to start at the Grace Road ground in Leicester at 11am on Sunday, April 27th.
Leicestershire ended last season at the bottom of the Division Two table with the East Midlands side struggling in both of their Championship matches against the Welsh county in 2013. At Leicester, they were forced to follow-on after a career-best 138* from Jim Allenby, plus half-centuries from Marcus North, Murray Goodwin and Graham Wagg, guided Glamorgan into a formidable position. Michael Hogan and John Glover then shared eight wickets between them as the home side failed to avoid the follow-on but the weather then intervened and probably saved the home side from defeat as the game ended in a draw.

However, Glamorgan were not to be denied later in the season when the two sides met again at the St. Helen's ground in Swansea. A superb 178 by Goodwin, plus 86 from Mark Wallace and 76 by Allenby guided Glamorgan to an innings victory in a match which also saw young off-spinner Andrew Salter claim a maiden wicket with his first-ever ball in Championship cricket.

In May 2010 Glamorgan recorded a remarkable victory at the Grace Road ground, and all after conceding a first innings deficit of 53 runs. Yet within 24 hours of being dismissed in their first innings, Glamorgan's seam bowlers had dismissed Leicestershire for just 71 with both James Harris and David Harrison taking four wickets in a masterly display of new ball bowling. Openers Gareth Rees and Mark Cosgrove then bludgeoned 198 runs inside 34 overs with the Australian left-hander scoring an unbeaten 113 as Glamorgan romped to a ten-wicket victory - their first Championship win on Leicestershire soil since 1986.

Squad News

After their draw against Gloucestershire earlier in the week, Glamorgan have made a couple of changes to their squad for the visit to Leicester. The squad in full is: GP Rees, WD Bragg, SJ Walters, JA Rudolph, MW Goodwin, J Allenby, MA Wallace (capt), DL Lloyd, GG Wagg, JC Glover, WT Owen and DA Cosker.
