Match-Saving Century Was A Challenge – Lloyd

David Lloyd admitted it was a big challenge to rescue Glamorgan against Sussex at Hove yesterday, after hitting his third first-class hundred of the season.

Lloyd, 24, who has made his name as an explosive top order batsman in white-ball cricket, dug in to bat 168 balls for 102 not out to steer Glamorgan into the clear, with help from Aneurin Donald (44 from 109 balls) and Jacques Rudolph (38 from 72).

The North Walian admitted it was a tough day, but a rewarding one for Glamorgan in the end, as the Welsh county earned a draw when the players and umpires shook hands with the score 307/6.

Lloyd said: "It was a big challenge, we lost an early wicket but the way the boys turned up today and occupied the crease was really good, so to come away with a draw is excellent.

"I tried to bat time but also to bat positively as well so as not to die in a hole - the way Aneurin played his shots, it rubbed off on myself as well so we just had to make sure it was the right ball to put away."

Lloyd was approaching his century just as stumps were about to be drawn, so the Welshman decided to take a risk and earn his second County Championship ton of the season and his third in all forms of first-class cricket after previous centuries against Kent, Cardiff MCCU and 99 against Gloucestershire.

He added: "I didn't have a choice [about staying on for his hundred], I thought by the field that Sussex set, I had one over to get it so that's what I tried to do."

Lloyd and his Glamorgan teammates will now turn their attention to three T20 matches in four days, beginning with the home clash against Sussex Sharks at The SSE SWALEC tomorrow (Thursday) night.

"We've had a good start in both white-ball formats and the T20 is the one we're really trying to target after the start we've had, so hopefully we can keep it going at home," said Lloyd.
