England One-Day captain Eoin Morgan has been speaking today at the one-year countdown to the start of the ICC Champions Trophy, which will be played at The Oval, Edgbaston and Cardiff.
England will come up against Australia, New Zealand and Bangladesh in group A, with the tournament running between June 1 and 18 next year. Group B comprises of India, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
Discussing the prospect of gaining revenge against Bangladesh in England’s first match – the side they lost to in last summer’s World Cup – Morgan said: “Yeah, it certainly sits pretty close in my memory. It was a day where they played better than us, and hopefully the start of the Champions Trophy this time next year is going to be a successful one.
Morgan insisted that England have moved on from the disappointment of that, and have been boosted by the recent success in the Twenty20 World Cup, as well as narrow defeats by Australia and South Africa in one-day series.
He added: "We take a huge amount of confidence into the summer. We have an incredible amount of talent as we have seen over the last 12 months or so.
"We've seen some young guns come out and perform at their best, and that's been a huge testament to the culture we have created."
England will start the tournament against Bangladesh at The Kia Oval on June 1, which will also host the final on June 18.
Matches against New Zealand on June 6 and Australia on June 10 will determine how far this England team can go in the tournament, and Morgan is looking to use it as a benchmark for this team’s current and future progression.
He said: “This tournament will mark two years since the squad has been together and, looking forward to the 2019 World Cup, it's a very important step for us.”
Morgan's England take on New Zealand at The SSE SWALEC, Cardiff on June 6.
