NATO Summit - Find out how travelling in Cardiff will be affected

19 Aug 2014 | Cricket
Glamorgan Cricket host the second Royal London One Day International between England and India at their headquarters the SWALEC Stadium on Wednesday 27th August, which co-incides with the build-up to the NATO Summit being held nearby the city (4/5 September).
As a result of the Summit a number of security and transport related measures are in place around Cardiff. To help customers visiting Cardiff for the ODI, please note the following guidance from Cardiff Council with respect to the game at the SWALEC Stadium.

1. City Centre Security Fence Setup
Due to the tight security required for this event, a fence line has to be put up to protect the buildings being used in Cardiff where world leaders will be meeting for working dinners.

This fence line has started to be built in Bute Park on August 7th, and will begin to be built on the A470/North Road during the night time of August 15th to the 21st , with the entire structure in place by August 22nd. This will involve night time closures to allow the fence to be put up

2. When the fence is put up, what will be the traffic restrictions?
From August 22nd until September 12th, traffic restrictions will be in place. A traffic Management Plan will be put in place giving diversion routes so drivers are aware of the restrictions.

In summary, from the North, there will be a single lane inbound on North Road from junction with Column Road, onto Kingsway, Duke Street, Castle Street, across Castle Street Bridge and Cowbridge Road East to junction with Cathedral Road.

From the West, two lanes will be in place from the junction with Cathedral Road (narrowing to one lane to go through the outer cordon and widening out again), inbound along Cowbridge Road East, Castle Street Bridge, Castle Street, Kingsway onto North Road (narrowing to one lane to go through outer cordon) at the junction with Corbett Road. There are no right turns into Westgate Street, from Kingsway into Greyfriars Road and from Kingsway/North Road into Boulevard De Nantes.

From the East - road narrowing to one lane on Boulevard De Nantes, left and right turn still available. All vehicles exiting the Kingsway, Queen Street, St John Street, High Street, Womanby Street and Westgate Street will only be able to make a left turn.

2. When will the Royal College of Music and Drama, Bute Park and the Castle be closed to the public?
This will only be during the lock down when the events take place as the area will be sealed off by the Police. It is envisaged that this will be on September 4th from 2 am until 6 am on September 5th . During this short period there will be no access to these buildings. However it will still be possible to walk through Bute Park on the day of the international cricket match.

3. What about deliveries to businesses?
Cardiff Council will be engaging with all businesses in this area from Monday August 11th . Deliveries will be unaffected and when necessary alternative routes will be suggested.

4. When will the fence line be taken down along the A470/North Road and how long will the traffic restrictions be in place?
Every effort will be made to take down the fence line as quickly as possible. The fence is scheduled to be removed along the highway by September 12. Certain traffic restrictions will be lifted after the events and clearly communicated to drivers but disruption to Boulevard de Nantes will continue until the fence line is removed from this area.

5. I cycle down the Taff Trail, will I be restricted?
Access to the Taff Trail will be unaffected until the lock down period between September 4th and September 5th . When the restrictions are in place cyclists are advised to travel on the other side of the river through Sophia Gardens.

6. Due to the restrictions, what is the Council's advice to those who travel by car in the city centre?
Every effort is being made to minimise disruption as best as possible. The Council advise the public to use the park and ride facilities. Glamorgan CCC has set up a dedicated Park & Ride for supporters travelling to watch the ODI at Cardiff City Stadium. Priced £10 there will be regular buses leaving the football ground to drop off at Sophia Close near to the Mochyn Du pub, close to the SWALEC Stadium. The Park and Ride is stewarded throughout and there is no need to pre-book. However, it is recommended that you should allow additional time for your journey.

7. Will my bus route be affected?
The Council has been working closely with bus operators to ensure they are able to cascade information down to their customers. Further information will be available via the Cardiff Bus website www.cardiffbus.com

ODI Ticket holders travelling from Cardiff Central by Cardiff Bus can get free transport to the Sophia Close stop on bus services 25/25A/62/63

Given the restrictions of parking in the city centre, public transport such as trains and bus travel or use of the Park & Ride is recommended.
Please do leave additional time for your journey and most importantly enjoy your day.
