Reflections on 2016 - #4 David Lloyd

29 Oct 2016 | Cricket
The fourth in the series of weekly features looking back on some of the highpoints and personal milestones achieved during the 2016 season by Glamorgan players focusses on the achievements of David Lloyd for whom last summer was a breakthrough season at 1st XI level.

After posting his maiden first-class hundred against Cardiff MCCU at The SSE SWALEC, David recorded his maiden Championship hundred against Kent at Canterbury. In the process, he became only the third North Walian-born batsman, after Wilf Wooller and Geoff Ellis, to make a Championship hundred for Glamorgan.

Born in Llandudno-born Geoff made 116 against Middlesex at Sophia Gardens in 1974 but this proved to be his sole hundred for Glamorgan in first-class cricket. In contrast, Wif made five centuries – against the 1939 West Indians at Cardiff Arms Park  followed by hundreds against  Lancashire at Liverpool in 1947, against  Worcestershire at Neath in 1951, versus Warwickshire at Neath in 1955 and in the game with Warwickshire at Edgbaston in 1956.

The match at Canterbury also saw David share a record sixth wicket stand of 215 in 38.2 overs – Glamorgan’s best –ever for that wicket against Kent with Graham Wagg. Their efforts trumped the 206 added by Jim Pressdee and Alan Rees at Maidstone in 1964 and saw Glamorgan to an eventual total of 414 as for only the second time in the Club’s history they surpassed 400 in their second innings against the English county.

A few weeks later at Hove, David added another Championship hundred to his tally against Sussex, whilst in the Nat West T20 Blast match against the Kent Spitfires at The SSE SWALEC, David made a unbeaten 97 from just 49 balls and came close not only to posting his maiden one-day hundred for the Club, but equalling Ian Thomas’ Club record for the fastest Twenty20 hundred for the Welsh county, made from 50 balls against Somerset at Taunton in 2004.

Further details about David’s achievements will appear in the 2017 Glamorgan Yearbook, which is due to be published in March.
