An assured 97 by Nick Selman helped Glamorgan to a first innings total of 221 on the opening day of their two-day friendly against Nottinghamshire at The SSE SWALEC. In reply, the visitor’s were 50/0 at the close of play.
Close of Play Report
Play resumed after tea with Glamorgan on 195/8 after 57 overs and Andrew Salter brought up the 200 by square-driving Brett Hutton for four. But Samit Patel made the perfect riposte for the visitors as he had Jack Murphy stumped by Chris Read as he advanced down the wicket. Salter twice on-drove Hutton for four besides pulling him to the mid-wicket ropes. With the total on 221, the Glamorgan innings ended as Lukas Carey top-edged a pull against Hutton with Kitt completing the catch at fine-leg.
Greg Smith and Jake Libby began Nottinghamshire’s reply with the former edging Carey to third man for four before Libby clipped Carey to mid-wicket for four. Smith then nurdled Meschede for four before cutting Lloyd for four. Roman Walker, the teenage seamer from Wrexham, then had a spell at the River End with the youngster from Glamorgan’s satellite Academy at Shrewsbury School , conceding a solitary boundary in his opening spell as he was square-cut by Libby.
After a series of maidens, Smith pulled Lloyd for four before Salter and Owen Morgan had a spell in tandem before the close.
Afternoon Update
Stuart Broad returned to the attack at the River End straight after lunch with Selman punching his first delivery through extra cover before two balls later square cutting a short delivery through backward point for another rasping four against the England paceman. Selman then straight-drove Broad for another four, but with the total on 116, he lost his partner Kiran Carlson who edged a delivery from Brett Hutton and was well caught diving to his right by veteran wicket-keeper Chris Read.
Aneurin Donald joined Selman who survived a sharp chance in the slips as he edged Broad, before the new batsman opened his account with flowing cover drives against both bowlers. After bowling four overs for 24 runs, Broad was replaced by Harry Gurney who was also despatched through the covers with a flowing drive by Selman, before being clipped to fine-leg for four by the opener.
With the total on 155 Gurney removed Donald as the youngster propped forward and edged his defensive stroke into Read’s gloves, before two balls later the left-armer bowled Chris Cooke. Selman then greeted the return of Luke Fletcher to bowling duties by on-driving and leg-glancing him for further assured fours.
Selman again flicked Gurney to fine-leg for four before Ben Kitt replaced the left-armer at the River End. With his fourth delivery, the young seamer ended Selman’s stay at the crease as he chopped the ball onto his stumps three short of a deserved century. Craig Meschede began with a pair of pulls whilst Morgan guided Kitt to the vacant ropes at third man. Meschede also flicked Fletcher to long-leg for four but with the total on 190 Morgan under-edged Kitt and became another victim for Read.
Kitt then claimed his fifth wicket in the penultimate over before tea as he nonchalently took a one-handed catch in his follow-through as Meschede unfurled a straight drive.
Lunchtime Report
After winning the toss, Glamorgan opted to bat first with Jacques Rudolph and Nick Selman facing Ben Kitt, a young seamer who was born in South Devon as well as England opening bowler Stuart Broad. Kitt made early inroads as with his fourth delivery he bowled Rudolph with an in-swinger whilst Selman edged Broad through the slip cordon for the day’s first boundary. David Lloyd drilled Kitt through mid-off, extra cover and backward point for a trio of fiercely struck fours, before Selman clipped the youngster to square-leg for four.
Lloyd also edged Kitt into the slip cordon but the ball did not appear to quite carry into the hands of second slip. Two overs later, Lloyd was not so fortunate as he was caught at first slip by Rikki Wessels, with Glamorgan losing their second wicket on 27. Selman greeted the introduction of Harry Gurney into the attack at the Cathedral Road End by glancing him to fine-leg for four before punching him off the back foot through the covers .
Kiran Carlson began by guiding Kitt to third man for four before Selman brought up the fifty by pulling Gurney for four. Luke Fletcher then replaced Kitt at the River End and was clipped to the mid-wicket ropes by Selman, with the latter also off-driving Gurney to the ropes. Carlson found the ropes again as he square-cut Fletcher before bringing up the 50-stand by biffing the burly bowler through point.
Carlson celebrated by clipping the next delivery to the boards at backward square-leg before Selman did the same to Brett Hutton when he entered the attack at the Cathedral Road End.Samit Patel also had a short spell at the River End before lunch and was nurdled for four by Selman as the opener reache his fifty from 81 balls..
