The mathematics student at Bristol University began with figures of 5/52 before posting 40 in Wales' reply. Yesterday, after a delayed start he ripped through the Shropshire batting with a return of 6/24 as the visitors were dismissed for just 62 in their second innings.
Smith was then promoted to number three when Wales batted again and he struck an unbeaten 35 as they reached their target for the loss of just two wickets.
