Close of Play Report

Harry Podmore and Jamie McIlroy shared the new ball as Andy Umeed and Steve Davies opened the batting for Somerset. Davies nurdled Podmore for four before Umeed on-drove McIlroy just over the head of James Harris at mid-on. Next over, Umeed departed as he danced down the wicket to Podmore and spliced a catch into Chris Cooke’s gloves.

10-1 saw George Thomas join Davies and he began by pulling Podmore for four before cover-driving him for a pair of fours. However, in Podmore’s next over Thomas top-edged a pull and was caught by Byrom at mid-wicket. Having been joined by Lewis Goldsworthy, Davies scythed McIlroy over the short boundary at extra-cover for six. James Harris and Timm van der Gugten then had a spell in tandem with Goldsworthy clipping Harris to square-leg before nearly holing out at point. He also square-drove the Dutchman for another four before cover-driving Harris for four.

Davies then cover-drove Harris before flaying three successive fours against van der Gugten to complete a 54-ball fifty as Somerset also reached the 100-mark in the 21st over. Goldsworthy also struck successive fours to the short boundary at extra-cover against Harris but with the total on 116 Davies spooned a ball to Byrom at point and departed for 61.

Teatime Update

Resuming after lunch on 122-2, Sam Northeast cover-drove Lewis Gregory for four before Colin Ingram swatted Craig Overton through point for four. Northeast then off-drove and on-drove Gregory before edging the acting captain to Ben Green in the gully. 138-3 saw the arrival of Kiran Carlson who began with fours to third man and fine-leg. Ingram then off-drive and flicked Overton to short fine-leg, but to the last ball of the over he sparred outside off-stump and edged to third slip who parried the ball into the hands of the bobble-hatted Gregory at first slip.

158-4 then became 164-5 as Carlson edged Josh Davey into the hands of third slip as Chris Cooke and Billy Root joined forces. The latter cover drove Jack Brooks for four when he returned to the attack as well as flicking him to the ropes at short fine-leg. Root then cover-drove Brooks for a pair of fours before Cooke punched Sonny Baker for four and six through and over extra-cover as the 200 came up in the 39th over.

Root also drove Brooks for another four square of the wicket before repeating the shot against Baker and through the hands of backward point. Cooke then cover-drove a trio of fours against the off-spin of Shoaib Bashir before Root pulled Baker for four as well as driving Bashir for four through extra-cover. Cooke then clipped Baker to the ropes at short mid-wicket before Root drilled him through the covers for a pair of sweetly-timed fours. Cooke also late-cut and square-cut Bashir for a couple of fours before Root reached his fifty from 68 balls with a square-drive for four against Kasey Aldridge. Next over Cooke followed suit from 42 balls.

Morning Report

After the start of play was delayed by overnight frain, the contest bgean at 12noon with Glamorgan batting first with the boundary ropes – brought in because of numerous waterlogged areas on the outfield - resembling a dodecahedron. David Lloyd and Eddie Byrom opened the batting against Craig Overton and Josh Davey. The latter was drilled through cover by Lloyd for the day’s first boundary, as well as being pulled to the boards at mid-wicket later in the over by the Glamorgan captain who, next ball, nonchalantly flicked the Scottish international to square-leg.

Lloyd made it three fours in succession as he drilled Davey through mid-off before Byrom added a pair of cover drives later in the over. But with the total on 33, Lloyd edged Overton to Andy Umeed at third slip. Colin Ingram began by slashing Overton through backward point for four before doing the same in Jack Brooks’ opening over. Byrom then flicked Davey to the ropes at short fine-leg before driving him through the covers as the 50 came up in the tenth over.

Byrom then top-edged a pull against Brooks with the ball sailing over the long-leg ropes for six before cover-driving Kasey Aldridge for a pair of more authentic boundaries. He then cover-drove and pulled Brooks for four and six in successive balls, before Ingram cover-drove and off-drove the bandana-wearing seamer. Byrom reached his 50 from 48 balls by straight-driving Aldridge for his tenth boundary, before repeating the stroke later in the over as the hundred came up after an hour’s play.

Byrom then deftly steered Aldridge through third man for four before cover-driving the young seamer . The opener then steered Lewis Gregory through backward point but later in the over and with the total on 122, Byrom departed for 71 as Ben Green held a smart catch in the gully
