Glamorgan travel to Taunton to play their penultimate group match in Metro Bank One-Day Cup with the Welsh county meeting Somerset on Sunday, 20 August in a game which is scheduled to start at 11.00am. (writes Andrew Hignell)
After their defeat on Wednesday at Cardiff, plus victories for Gloucestershire and Worcestershire on Friday, Glamorgan remain in fifth place in the group table and now cannot progress to the knockout stages of the One-Day Cup. Somerset are in seventh place after ending their losing run by defeating Durham on Thursday at Gosforth. As the list below shows of the last six List A matches between Glamorgan and Somerset, the West Country side have won the last five meetings between the two sides:
12 August 2014 at Taunton – Glamorgan won by 95 runs.
24 July 2016 at Taunton – Somerset won by 33 runs.
5 May 2017 at Cardiff – Somerset won by 140 runs.
20 May 2018 at Taunton – Somerset won by 83 runs.
21 April 2019 at Cardiff - Somerset won by 2 runs.
28 July 2021 at Taunton - Somerset won by 1 run.
The match two years ago at Taunton was reduced because of rain to 37 overs with Somerset’s acting captain Ben Green top-scoring with 87 to see the West Country side to 180-7. In reply, Glamorgan lost wickets at regular intervals with their last pair, Andy Gorvin and Michael Hogan needing to score ten from the final over bowled by Lewis Goldsworthy. The pair scored three singles against the left-arm spinner, but Hogan could not score off the fourth ball before swatting the fifth to mid-wicket for one. This left Gorvin needing to strike the last ball for six to win the game, and although the youngster made good contact, his lofted drive fell just short of the ropes at long-on with the ball bouncing away for four as Somerset celebrated a dramatic victory.
The game at Cardiff in 2019 was another nerve-jangling contest with a doughty last wicket stand between Timm van der Gugten and Lukas Carey appeared to be seeing Glamorgan to a famous victory, only for Azhar Ali to take a tumbling catch at mid-off to clinch a Somerset victory by two runs.
Glamorgan’s most recent victory over Somerset in List A cricket came in a rain-affected game at Taunton in 2014 by 95 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis Method. Jacques Rudolph led the way with a fine 111 before half-centuries by Murray Goodwin and Chris Cooke propelled Glamorgan to a decent total. Michael Hogan then delivered a waspish opening spell as he removed both openers and, with the rest of the Glamorgan attack in frugal mode, Somerset’s batsmen opted for the aerial route before falling to some fine catches in the outfield as they desperately tried to get close to the par score.
