Somerset are Glamorgan’s next opponents in the Vitality Blast as the Welsh side head to Taunton for a T20 contest scheduled to get underway at 18.30pm at Taunton on Tuesday, 1 September. (writes Andrew Hignell)
Unlike Glamorgan, Somerset are still searching for their first win in this year’s T20 competition having lost on Sunday to the Northants Steelbacks, who also defeated the Worcestershire Rapids at New Road on Saturday and are currently at the top of the Central Group.
The Welsh county have lost on their last two visits to Taunton, with Somerset winning last summer by 25 runs and in 2018 by 29 runs. The defeat for Glamorgan in 2019 followed a high-class 63 from Babar Azam, the Pakistan batsman and a stuttering start by the Welsh county. Chasing 178 to win, Shaun Marsh was caught at slip off the seventh ball of the innings before two deliveries later Colin Ingram was run out. David Lloyd then struck a valiant half-century off 31 balls to give Glamorgan a ray of hope, but with Max Waller removing Chris Cooke and Callum Taylor in successive balls, Glamorgan were always behind the asking rate.
The game during 2018 saw Somerset win by 29 runs after Corey Anderson, the New Zealand all-rounder had bludgeoned a match-winning 72 with a trio of massive sixes. Glamorgan however were victorious in 2017 at Taunton with the Welsh county clinching qualification for the quarter-finals as they won a gripping contest by one run after a maiden half-century from Nick Selman plus a nerveless display by their bowlers in the closing over as Michael Hogan and Marchant de Lange stifled a late Somerset rally.
The game at Taunton in 2016 was washed out by the rain, but the game in 2015 at Taunton had also seen Glamorgan win by three runs, thanks to Colin Ingram who posted an imperious 96 from 62 balls and Wayne Parnell who delivered a superb final over. With the home side needing twelve off the final over, Tim Groenewald on-drove the South African’s first delivery for four and, after a flurry of singles and a wide, Abdur Rehman was left needing to strike four from the final two balls. But Parnell yorked the Pakistani spinner before Max Waller failed to make contact with the final delivery.
