Kevin Pietersen smashed 62 as he lead the Melbourne Stars into Sunday's Big Bash final.
Strong bowling performances from Adam Zampa, Dan Worrall and Michael Beer restricted the Scorchers to 139/7 from their 20 overs, with Gloucesteshire's Michael Kilinger hitting a steady 44. The opener only got support from fellow Australian Adam Voges, whose 52 from 40 was the only other recognisable knock. Hampshire's Michael Carberry finished his mixed season when he failed to get going, whilst Yorkshire's David Willey was out first ball when he was caught in the 16th over.
Pietersen picked up Man of the Match for what was a truly impressive innings. He seemed completely in control from the moment he walked to the crease and he hit his way to 50 to put the Stars in full control. Pietersen was out for 62 (from 36 balls) when he was bowled through his legs playing some sort of reverse sweep, but the game was all but over by this stage. Other contributions came from Marcus Stoinis, who hit an excellent 44 before being trapped LBW by Hogg, and Peter Handscomb, whose composed 15 saw the Stars home with 11 balls to go.
The Melbourne team will be joined by the Sydney Thunder who booked their place in the final by beating the Adelaide Strikers on Thursday. The Thunder have turned their competition form around in what has been a successful season - no matter the outcome of Sunday's final. They blew the Adelaide Strikers away with a dominating bowling performance that put the Strikers in trouble early on, with an Adil Rashid last over cameo bringing their score up to 160. The score looked competitive before an Usman Khawaja T20 batting masterclass made the chase look simple. He hit 104 from 59 balls against one of the best bowling attacks in the tournament, bringing up his second ton of BBL 5.
The final will see the Hussey brothers go up against each others as captains of the opposing sides, and the teams will feature a range of stars including those mentioned before, as well as; Andre Russell, Luke Wright, Shane Watson and Jacques Kallis.
