It’s time to look forward to 2024 and, from a statistical point of view, consider what lies in store. (writes Andrew Hignell)
• 2024 is set to see the 1,000th hundred by a Glamorgan batter in first-class cricket. The first was made in the Club’s inaugural season in the County Championship in 1921 as Billy Spiller, the Cardiff policeman and former Welsh rugby international, scored a century against Northamptonshire at the Wantage Road ground.
So far, 997 hundreds have been scored in first-class matches for the Welsh county, with the most recent being Sam Northeast’s 166 against Yorkshire at Sophia Gardens. This means that the third hundred in first-class games in 2024 will see the 1,000th being recorded.
• Glamorgan will meet Middlesex for the 100th time in first-class cricket when the 2024 season begins at Lord’s in early April. The teams first met in the County Championship on 31 May, 1933 at Lord’s and, since that time, Glamorgan have been victorious on ten occasions. Five of their victories have come at home – at Cardiff Arms Park in 1950, at Swansea in 1959, 1969 and 2009, and at Sophia Gardens in 1991. Glamorgan have also been victorious on four occasions in Championship matches at Lord’s – in 1952, 1954, 2010, 2011 – as well as winning the game at Southgate in 2000.
• Chris Cooke is set to become the first player to appear in 150 T20 matches for Glamorgan. So far, the batter-keeper, who celebrates a Testimonial Year during 2024, has made 148 appearances for the Welsh county.
