Stat Attack - Reflections on 2017 #4

4 Nov 2017 | Cricket
This week’s instalment in the series of features reflecting on some of the highlights of 2017 season focuses on the achievements of Nick Selman. For the Australian-born batsman, 2017 was a breakthrough season and under the previous programme of sixteen or more Championship games, the opener would have passed 1,000 runs in first-class cricket for the first time in his fledgling career in county cricket.

In all, Nick struck four Championship hundreds with only Surrey’s Kumar Sangakkara and Worcestershire’s Daryl Mitchell scoring more first-class hundreds during 2017. Nick began with an unbeaten 117 against Leicestershire at Grace Road before making another unbeaten century and a match-winning one to boot as he made 116* and calmly guided Glamorgan to their target in the Championship match against Durham at Swansea.

Besides seeing his team to their victory target at St.Helen’s, Nick’s hundred was the first in the County Championship by a Glamorgan batsman against Durham since 2004 when Michael Powell scored 124 at Chester-le-Street. He then added another hundred against the same opponents, making 103 at the Emirates Riverside, although this time it was not in a winning cause.

Nick’s fourth century of the summer came in the final home match of the season as he posted a career-best score of 142* against Gloucestershire at The SSE SWALEC, with his innings spanning 237 balls and 291 mins as the match ended in a draw. This was Nick’s 25th first-class match for the Welsh county and in his 46 innings he has reached the 50-mark 11 times, whilst on six occasions he has gone on to reach three figures.

Further details about the milestones achieved by Nick Selman, and other Glamorgan players during 2017 will appear in the 2018 Glamorgan Yearbook, which is due to be published next March.
