This week’s instalment in the series of features reflecting on some of the statistical highlights of the 2017 season looks at some of the records established by Glamorgan\'s fielders.
Nick Selman was the leading fielder for the Club in first-class cricket, with Nick completing 16 catches – the highest tally for Glamorgan since 2013 when Jim Allenby pouched 28. Chris Cooke ended his first full season behind the stumps with a total of 40 catches in first-class games, with the season’s sole stumping being completed by his understudy Tom Cullen in the match against Colwyn Bay at Sussex.
As far as white-ball cricket was concerned, Chris had a field day in Glamorgan’s Royal London One-Day Cup game against Kent at Swansea, with the wicket-keeper claiming five catches, to equal the Club’s record in a List A match set by Eifion Jones against Hampshire at Portsmouth in 1979 and Adrian Shaw against Northamptonshire at Northampton in 1999.
Chris also completed the decisive run out of James Tredwell in the closing stages of the high-scoring contest at St.Helen’s, underarming the ball back to the stumps as the Kent batsmen desperately tried to sneak a bye. It could therefore be argued that Chris actually claimed six victims in the game, emulating the achievements of Eifion Jones, Terry Davies and Colin Metson who, with four catches and two stumpings each, completed half a dozen victims for Glamorgan in List A games.
In Eifion’s case, this came against Kent at Maidstone in 1978, whilst Terry completed the feat against Staffordshire at Stone in 1986. Colin took claimed six victims – first against Nottinghamshire at Swansea in 1993, and secondly against Hampshire at Sophia Gardens in 1995.
