stat attack - reflections on 2017 #7

25 Nov 2017 | Cricket
The seventh and final instalment in the series of features reflecting on some of the statistical highlights of the 2017 season focusses on the achievements of Kiran Carlson, the young batsman who is set to add more records to his tally in forthcoming summers.

On September 12th, 2016 Kiran had become - at 18 years and 119 days old - the youngest centurion in first-class cricket for Glamorgan as he completed a century against Essex at Chelmsford. A year and eight days later, KIran missed out by nine runs on beating the record set in 2016  by his colleague Aneurin Donald who, against Derbyshire at Colwyn Bay, had become Glamorgan’s youngest double-centurion.

Even if he failed to become the club’s batsman to score both 100 and 200 in Championship cricket, Kiran’s innings of 191 against Gloucestershire at The SSE SWALEC does feature in the record books as it was the highest score by a homegrown batsman for the Welsh county since the Stadium was created, beating the 172 by Ben Wright against the same opponents at the ground in 2010.

Kiran also came within nine runs of joining the small and select group of batsmen to have registered a double-hundred for Glamorgan at the Cardiff ground in Championship cricket. For the record, the others are:

233*      Hugh Morris v Warwickshire, 1997

224*      Viv Richards v Middlesex, 1993

217        Jimmy Maher v Essex, 2001

214*      Adrian Dale v Middlesex, 1993

214        Matthew Maynard v Lancashire, 1996

204        Matthew Maynard v Nottinghamshire, 1991

202*      Hugh Morris v Yorkshire, 1996

Further details about the milestones achieved by Kiran and other Glamorgan players during 2017 will appear in the 2018 Glamorgan Yearbook, which is due to be published next March. To place an order at the special advanced price of £17 (plus £1.99 postage),  please send an email to museum@glamorgancricket.co.uk   or write to Yearbook Orders, c/o Archives Department, Glamorgan CCC, The SSE SWALEC, Cardiff, CF11 9XR. Please note that from December 1st, the Yearbook will be available at £18 (plus £1.99 postage).

With the imminent confirmation of fixtures for the 2018 season, another series of “STAT ATTACK” will appear in a few weeks’ time, looking ahead to next summer and some of the milestones which are in the reach of Glamorgan’s players.
