Graham Wagg struck his first hundred on Welsh soil for Glamorgan on a dramatic and record-breaking second day of their Specsavers County Championship match against Derbyshire at Swansea.
Arriving at the wicket with his side on 217/7, he launched a furious counter-attack as together with Lukas Carey he added 167 in 27.2 overs for the ninth wicket – Glamorgan’s best-ever for that wicket against the Peakites and the third-best at the Swansea ground surpassed by the unbeaten 203 added by Joe Hills and Johnnie Clay against Worcestershire in 1929 and the 185 added by Robert Croft and James Harris against Nottinghamshire in 2007.
In all, it was the highest ninth wicket stand for the Welsh county since Robert Croft and Adama Shantry added 197 against Leicestershire at Colwyn Bay in 2009, whilst Carey’s unbeaten 62 was a career-best.
As far as Wagg is concerned, his century was his fourth for Glamorgan, having struck 116*against Kent at Canterbury in 2014, 200 versus Surrey at Guildford in 2015 and 106 in the match with Kent at Canterbury in 2016.
