Glamorgan secured a dramatic one-run victory in the Royal London One-Day Cup against Essex Eagles after Michael Hogan defended seven runs in the final over.
Batting first the Welsh county posted 281 from their fifty overs thanks to a career best 142 from Colin Ingram. The South African batsman came to the crease with Glamorgan in trouble at 20/2 but put on important partnerships with Will Bragg and Kiran Carlson to set Essex Eagles a challenging target.
“We had to really grind hard when we lost a couple of wickets early,” said Ingram. “We got stuck in during the middle part of the innings, but then it was nice to be able to express myself at the end.”
Essex Eagles looked on course for victory when Varun Chopra and Ravi Bopara were at the crease but some stunning death over bowling by Meschede, de Lange and Hogan, as well as terrific fielding from wicket-keeper Cooke saw Glamorgan record a famous win.
“Credit to the guys we hung in well with the ball. We kept taking wickets which kept us alive and then the bowling in the last few overs was tremendous. The boys at the end showed real nerve to get us the win.”
Glamorgan next face Middlesex at Radlett in the Royal London One-Day Cup, with the Welsh county needing a victory to stay alive. Ingram believes the momentum from this victory can be the springboard for more success in the competition.
“We’ve been doing the right things but it hasn’t been paying off the in the middle. Results haven’t been going our way so this was a big confidence boost for us and it keeps us alive in the competition.
“We know we can’t hold anything back so hopefully that puts us in a good space for Middlesex on Wednesday.”
Glamorgan’s next home match in the Royal London One-Day Cup is against Kent at St Helen’s in Swansea on Sunday (11am). Tickets are available to purchase HERE until 3pm Thursday 11th May or on the gate on the day.
