Top five things to look forward to in 2018...

10 Jan 2018 | Cricket
It promises to be an exciting season at Glamorgan with new arrivals on both the playing and coaching staff, while The SSE SWALEC hosts some huge matches throughout the season. To stir up the excitement on the lead up to the new campaign, here is a breakdown of our top five things to look forward to in 2018…
1. The Arrival of Shaun Marsh

What an Ashes series it was for our new overseas signing! Marsh ended as the Ashes’ second highest run scorer behind Steve Smith as he helped Australia romp home to a 4-0 series win.

Marsh plundered 446 runs in the five-match series at an average over 74 as he silenced the disquiet in the Australian media about his selection.

His standout innings came in his man of the match display in the second Test in Adelaide where he hit his fifth Test hundred and first Ashes century to rescue the Australian innings.

The left-hander, who hit four scores of fifty or more in just seven innings will be available across all three formats for Glamorgan.

2. Young Welsh Talent

Andrew Salter, Kiran Carlson, Lukas Carey and Aneurin Donald all played prominent roles for Glamorgan across all three formats last year.

Twenty-year-old Carey took 35 Specsavers County Championship wickets at a fraction over 30 in his first full season, while Carlson hit 191 against Gloucestershire, the Welsh county’s highest individual score of the season.

Donald relished the opportunity at the top of the order in the T20 Blast, smashing 76 against Surrey at the Oval and Andrew Salter put in some match-winning contributions with both bat and ball and was so close to taking Glamorgan over the line on Finals Day.

They will all be looking to kick on this season, as will the likes of Owen Morgan and David Lloyd, as well as Connor Brown and Jack Murphy who made their first-class debuts for the Welsh county in 2017.

3. #Kingram

Our 2017 Player of the Year, Colin Ingram returns to Glamorgan to lead our white-ball team and looking to replicate his incredible form from last year.

He amassed over 1,000 runs across the T20 Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup, with the highlight his man of the match performance in the quarter-final of the T20 Blast against Leicestershire.

Ingram has had a busy winter so far, first appearing for the Warriors in the RAM SLAM, before moving on to Australia where he is now smashing attacks to all parts for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League.

4. International Cricket

It doesn’t get any bigger than International fixtures involving Australia and India!

First, we welcome the old enemy, Australia in an ODI on Saturday, 16th June, before the mighty India arrive in Cardiff for an IT20 on Friday, 6th July.

Joe Root, Virat Kohli and Steve Smith are just some of the world stars likely to be in action in Wales this summer.

Tickets for both matches can be purchased via our website HERE or by calling 02920 419311.

5. The Return of the T20 Blast

The T20 Blast competition has been our most fruitful competition over the last few years.

In 2016 we reached the quarter-final stage, while last year we topped the south group and reached Finals Day for the first time since 2004, before falling agonisingly short in the first semi-final against Warwickshire Bears.

With the arrival of Shaun Marsh, the six-hitting power of Colin Ingram, the young Welsh talent coming through and the experience of older players such as Michael Hogan and Graham Wagg, Glamorgan will be looking to go one further in 2018.

This year we have four home fixtures on a Friday night, including blockbuster matches against Surrey and local rivals Somerset. We also host two matches on a Sunday against Sussex and Kent Spitfires and a Tuesday night game versus Essex Eagles.
