View from the Opposition: Somerset

13 Jun 2015 | Cricket
Glamorgan face Somerset at The SSE SWALEC today (2.30pm scheduled start) with familiar faces on both sides, as Ingram and Meschede are in line to play against their old West country teammates and the same can be said for Maynard and Allenby in reverse.
Abdur Rehman replaces Chris Gayle as Somerset's second overseas player, alongside Pakistani compatriot Sohail Tanvir, as the former Glamorgan captain and coach Matthew Maynard returns to Cardiff for the first time since taking over as the director of cricket at Taunton last winter.

It is going to be strange, he says. I don't think I have even watched a game at Cardiff since I finished as Glamorgan coach in 2010. Obviously there are some strong ties.

But all my focus is on Somerset winning. I have bought a house there, which shows my commitment to my current job and we need a victory because Glamorgan pose a strong threat in the group.

Somerset include the former Glamorgan all-rounder Jim Allenby, and Craig Meschede will also be playing against his former club having made an excellent impression since moving to Cardiff from Taunton on a season-long loan.

I still regard him as a big player in Somerset's future and the obvious successor to Peter Trego some day, added Maynard.

We couldn't guarantee him a regular first team place this summer, but he has another year on his contract with us and I shall be sitting down with him at the end of the season.
