Next week the Wales Over 50’s and Wales Over 60’s cricket teams entertain Australia in what will be two tough, prestigious fixtures within a busy, successful season.
The touring Australians are playing Wales and seventeen of the English County Boards in ‘friendly’ fixtures sanctioned through the England and Wales Cricket Board.
The Wales Over 50’s open proceedings on Tuesday 18th July with an 11.30am start at Newport Fugitives Cricket Club. Admission is free and all cricket lovers are asked to come along and enjoy what should be a memorable occasion. The match is 50 overs per side and Wales Over 50’s captain John Jones from Skewen Cricket Club is up for the challenge.
"It will be a huge honour to captain the Wales Over 50’s cricket team against the touring Australians," said John. "We Welsh dragons may be a little older but we are ready to roar!"
On Friday 21st July at 11.30am at Abergavenny Cricket Club, it is the turn of the Wales Over 60’s to test themselves against Australia’s finest. Again, everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the day. Captain Ryland Wallace from Crickhowell CC is looking forward to the occasion.
‘The Australians take their Over 60’s cricket very seriously and will be a stern test for us," said Ryland who played for Abergavenny for over 30 years. "We compete very well against English county opposition and are keen to step up to the plate against the tourists."
