After their fourth place finish in this year’s Specsavers County Championship, head coach Matt Maynard said it’s ‘been a pretty good campaign’ for the Welsh county after coming in 10th place the season before.
Maynard was particularly delighted with the resilience his side showed in the early stages of the competition, having gone unbeaten in their first nine games, but conceded they underperformed towards the end of the season.
“Overall it’s been a pretty good campaign,” said Maynard. “We faltered in the last four or five games, having lost three of them and drawn another.”
“It just shows that potentially we weren’t ready for Division One cricket yet. We did a lot of good things in the County Championship this year but perhaps we weren’t quite hard enough as you need to be for Division One cricket.
“We were at times and we showed a lot of resilience, but our skill level wasn’t quite there on occasions, with the Worcester game being a great example.
“In Championship cricket we have come a long way from last year where we lost 10 games. We have shown a lot more resilience and although we are slightly frustrated, we are delighted we have had so many career-bests this year.
“The captaincy of Chris and David Lloyd in his absence has been outstanding. I want to thank all the lads for their efforts this year because they really have put it in every training session we’ve had and a massive credit to the bowlers who have come in with great intensity during training.”
Although Glamorgan’s form greatly improved in the County Championship, the team endured a difficult Vitality Blast campaign which Maynard puts down to the batsmen being out of form.
“The T20 was hugely disappointing which was down to form. Not enough of our batsmen performed throughout the competition and essentially that’s what I put it down to.
“The effort was there in the training session and the guys never dropped their heads. They kept going but we weren’t good enough as a batting unit and that was really frustrating when part of my role is as a batting coach as well. It clicked once in the whole competition and that’s never going to sustain a successful campaign.”
